Position Details Department: Florida Institute Of Oceanography - Keys Marine Laboratory College Division: Academic Affairs - Florida Institute Oceanography Salary Plan: Staff Job Code/Title: 7169 / Biological Scientist - KML Hiring Salary/Salary Range: $45,000 - 55,0000 Position Number: 00024199 ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY: For nearly half a century, Florida's coastline and marine life has been protected and monitored by the Florida Institute of Oceanography providing a shared resource across the State University System (SUS). The Florida Institute of Oceanography (FIO) is a state-wide Academic Infrastructure Support Organization (AISO) established in 2009 by the Chancellor and Board of Governors (BOG) of the State University System (SUS). Hosted by the University of South Florida and housed at the College of Marine Science located in St.

Petersburg, Florida. The FIO has two major sea-going vessels, the R/V Hogarth and R/V Weatherbird II, along with the land-based Keys Marine Laboratory located in Layton, Florida that provide science and education capabilities. Combined, these platforms have supported over 10,000 undergraduate and graduate students Statewide since 2009, allowing students to connect first-hand with scientific research conducted along Florida's coast.

FIO operates under a Memorandum of Understanding with 32 institutions and agencies engaged in marine research, education and resources management, including all 12 public universities providing collaborating opportunities across academia, government, and private sector for educational, training, research and public outreach opportunities for students and scientists across Florida. POSITION SUMMARY: **Position located in Long Key at the Keys Marine Laboratory** As a requirement, incumbent must have sufficient boat handling skills to safely operate small vessels up to 40-foot length in marine coastal waters. Position will perform specific tasks that will include assisting visiting university education and research groups at KML and on the water as vessel operator.

Incumbent will assist visiting researchers at KML which may include site selection, sampling, and data collection, and data management and transfer. Tasks may include contribution to the design and execution of research protocols, data analysis, and preparation of publications. Incumbent must be willing to attain 50-ton Merchant Mariners license/document endorsed by the USCG within 6 months of employment.

As a requirement incumbent must be currently certified SCUBA diver with a minimum of 50 open water dives (Advanced and Rescue Diver certifications, and/or AAUS status). Incumbent must be able to attain AAUS scientific diver status within 2 months to support KML's SCUBA mission critical to support scientists, graduate students, and undergraduates in their collection and sampling of specimens in the field. This position will oversee permitting and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) approvals for research projects conducted at KML, in addition to captaining vessels and acting as lead science diver.

Incumbent must have depth of knowledge of scientific sampling in the coastal marine environment, as this position is located at the Keys Marine Laboratory (KML), Layton FL in the Florida Keys. Incumbent will perform specific tasks which will include developing and maintaining database(s) to track active and expiring permits and IACUC approvals for research projects conducted at KML. Incumbent is required to ensure all permits and protocols are in compliance with USF standards by working with the Research Integrity Office as well as with USF Dive Safety Officer.

Incumbent will maintain the Living Lab Benthic Monitoring database and assist visiting groups with protocols, data collection, and entry to ensure the integrity of the database. Incumbent will assist FIO webmaster to ensure the KML website is current. Incumbent will coordinate with FIO Communications & Marketing Office to manage KML social media presence and marketing.

Incumbent will develop and assist with outreach and education events for FIO and KML. RESPONSIBILITIES: Pilot and navigate KML vessels through coastal waters of the Florida Keys to engage in marine research. Inspect the vessels for readiness, prepares gear, and plans routes and float plans prior to departure.

Ensure proper maintenance and use of survival equipment. Supervise the work of scientists, undergraduates, and graduate students to ensure they are safe while performing field work. Must be able to make decisions regarding mission aborts, cancellations, or postponements due to weather or for other safety reasons.

SCUBA certification required with a minimum of 50 open water dives; must be able to meet and maintain AAUS training requirements including the use of mixed gases and at depths greater than 60 feet. Ability to tow small trailers (<30' length) and assist with maintenance of KML facility including infrastructure and vessels, and diving equipment. Designated Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) Coordinator for KML: Work directly with USF IACUC staff and potential KML clients Ensure that all approved documents are provided to USF IACUC for approval in advance of conducting research at KML.

Ensure that KML provides the required facilities and capabilities to hold and maintain vertebrates on site. Designated KML Permit Coordinator: Maintain all KML permits and ensures they are current. Ensure that all clients have appropriate permits to conduct their research while at KML.

Designated KML Data Base Manager, including but not limited to: Ensures IACUC approvals and permitting database is up-to-date. Manage Living Lab Benthic Monitoring database Update KML client information - Permits & IACUC approvals Data mining: Design and run queries in the databases for reports. Permits & IACUC - check expiration dates Living Lab - answer relevant ecological questions based on data collection Database improvements for KML Living Lab sites Assist with Seawater Systems Serve as backup SW systems manager to assist with regular maintenance, upgrades, and repairs, including emergencies.

Assist with maintaining and monitoring water quality. Assist visiting scientists including contribution to the design and execution of research protocols, data analysis, etc. Assist with maintenance of KML facility, including infrastructure, vessels, and dive equipment.

Social media, marketing, & website Work with FIO webmaster to ensure the KML website is current and relevant. Coordinate with FIO Communications & Marketing Office to manage KML social media presence and marketing strategies. Create online forms and run reports to track KML usage metrics.

Develop and assist with programs at KML (ie Science Night, Open House, etc.) Represent FIO and KML while attending conferences and workshops. Other duties as assigned POSITION QUALIFICATIONS: MINIMUM: This position requires a Bachelor's degree in a natural or physical sciences and 2 years of research experience or field work; or a Master's degree in a natural science. PREFERRED: Current SCUBA certification with minimum of 50 open water dives (Advanced and/or Rescue Diver, and/or AAUS science diver preferred) must be able to attain AAUS scientific diver status within 2 months of employment; Small boat handling/operations experience/skills to safely operate small vessels up to 40?

length in marine coastal waters. Be willing to attain Merchant Mariners license endorsed by the USCG within 6 months of employment. Must be able to maintain a valid Florida driver's license.
