Responsibilities
This is technical analysis work for the St. Petersburg Police Department, involving the examination of ballistic cartridge case evidence in support of the NIBIN (National Integrated Ballistic Information Network) program. The employee will utilize IBIS (Integrated Ballistics Identification System) and other ballistic imaging equipment to examine physical evidence associated with firearms investigations through microscope acquisition of cartridge case evidence. The employee will safely handle and test fire a variety of firearms. The examination and test fire results will be documented in official police investigative reports. Employees will be trained in ballistic acquisition and firearm safety. The employee will provide investigative support through ballistic analysis and comparison. The employee will also assist with tracking, disposition, or disposal of firearms in the custody of the police department. The employee will exercise considerable tact and discretion when encountering highly confidential or sensitive material. Work is reviewed through observation, reports, and results produced.
Qualifications
Applicants must:
- Have a valid Bachelor’s degree in criminology, criminal justice, or a related field.
- Possess and maintain valid Driver License.
- Possess strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing. Will be required to testify in court proceedings.
- Be proficient in the use of a computer to include well developed skills using Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel. Desirable Qualifications.
Preferred applicants:
- Have a Geographic Information Systems Professional (GISP) certification.
- Have at least three (3) years of prior experience in related law enforcement investigation or crime scene work.
- Have professional experience handling and operating firearms.
- Are certified as a NIBIN acquisition technician.
- Have experience utilizing ballistic imaging equipment such as comparison or stereo microscopes.
- Have experience using government systems, to include Odyssey, ELVIS, DAVID, and eTrace.
- Have experience working with record management systems tracking property, evidence, and chain of custody.
Minimum Qualification: Applicants must meet selection standards for civilians working in the Police Department, including polygraph and background check. Compensation
