JOB SUMMARY: This position has primary responsibilities for the processing activities in the surgical instrument area, under the supervision of the OR Charge Nurse.
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
Sterilizes basic instruments, equipment, utensils, & supplies using various types of autoclaves and aerators.
Loads autoclaves in prescribed manner and sets controls to specified time and temperature according to material & requirements of items being sterilized.
Completes appropriate sterilization documentation records.
Reads and initials autoclave logs to verify appropriate sterilization cycle and provides required records for inspection.
Assembles all instrument procedure trays, packs, and kits according to prescribed manner using content lists as a guide.
Wraps packages and handles all items following procedure.
Marks items with identifying data and distributes or stores in designated area.
Notifies supervisor when unable to replace parts or when equipment is deficient in work area.
Dispenses products requested for sterile and non-sterile equipment and supplies.
Assembles surgical case carts with required supplies, instrumentation, etc. according to physician preference cards.
Assigns priority to urgent requests and issues required supplies and equipment based on knowledge of procedure intended.
Assembles and wraps materials, instruments, and supplies according to established aseptic technique.
Dissembles and cleans basic instruments using approved disinfectants, detergents, soaps, and cleaners.
Reassembles instruments after cleaning and operates to test for proper function.
Reports lost or damaged instruments to appropriate persons. Transfers inoperable instruments to appropriate holding area for repair or replacement.
Performs other related duties as required, such as examining sterilization/expiration dates; reporting inoperable equipment; making visual inventory inspections to maintain adequate stock and supply; stores new and reprocessed equipment and supplies; cleans shelves and work areas and mops liquid spills from floors as necessary.
Maintains assigned work areas and equipment in a clean and organized condition to maintain required standards for handling sterilized and clean materials and to maintain a safe work environment.

Demonstrates working knowledge of asepsis and sterile technique and use of medical supplies and equipment.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
High School graduate or GED preferred. Prior experience in sterile supply or working as a CST is preferred.
