Job description

The North Tonawanda Cogeneration facility, located in North Tonawanda, New York, is a 55-megawatt combined-cycle cogeneration plant. At its core, it features one GE Frame 6 gas turbine generator, one HRSG (Heat Recovery Steam Generator), and one GE steam turbine generator, all supported by a diverse array of essential auxiliary equipment. This facility not only ensures efficient and reliable power generation but also serves as a vital source of electricity for the surrounding area, contributing to the region's energy needs.

General Summary

The OMT-Instrument Controls and Electrical (IC&E) Technician is primarily responsible for the maintenance and repair of all instruments, control systems and Electrical equipment in the power plant and the associated facilities. The OMT-IC&E Technician performs work of high skill in the inspection repair, testing, adjustment, installation and removal of all electronic and Electrical power plant equipment and systems. The OMT-IC&E Technician also qualifies to operate the plant. 

Primary Functions

  • Inspect repair, install and remove all types of motors, generators, transformers, switches, control equipment, wiring, electrical signal and communication systems, and storage batteries, and work with electrical systems up to and including 4160 volts
  • Conduct trouble shooting and analysis on DCS, PLC and turbine control equipment
  • Maintain all plant instrumentation and Electrical test equipment
  • Perform preventive maintenance duties on all major electrical equipment and systems as well as emergency backup systems
  • Maintain complete equipment files, logs, and drawings for all designated equipment
  • Assist in maintaining and controlling spare parts inventory to maintain plant reliability.  Assist in physical inventories.
  • Participate in the administrative maintenance of the plant operating manuals, technical references, prints and diagrams and preventive/predictive maintenance records
  • Fully support and participate in NAES Safety and Regulatory Compliance Programs
  • Complete other tasks as assigned by the Plant Manager

The OMT-IC&E Technician will also qualify to perform a variety of operations duties to support the operation of the plant based on skills and qualifications to include:

  • Conduct all startup, shutdown and load changing operations on the plant
  • Control all auxiliary systems and supporting equipment such as boilers, air compressors, circulating water systems, boiler feed water treatment and condensate systems, waste water systems, generator cooling system, and locally controlled electrical and mechanical equipment
  • Report upset conditions or other anomalies in plant status to the Plant Manager
  • Conducts all routine water/gas chemistry analysis, inspects and monitors operating components and reports plant status.  Performs routine equipment rounds and inspections in compliance with established operating procedures.

Working Relationships

The OMT-IC&E Technician reports to the Plant Manager and works in cooperation with the operating utility on matters pertaining to the daily operation of the plant.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, stair and ladder climbing and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g. hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves and high voltage protective equipment, etc.). Work with hazardous materials may be required. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.

Fitness for Duty

All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening. 

Work Schedule

Regular scheduled work week is Monday to Friday, during regular day shift hours. Position requires extended working hours and varied shifts with weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, work load and plant conditions. "On call" status will periodically be required.

Compensation

Starting compensation will range from $35.78 to $50.11 per hour.

Job Qualifications

  • Work experience as a technician in a power plant environment or related industry
  • Experience with Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) is required
  • Experienced in troubleshooting, maintaining, and ensuring the upkeep of Distributive Control Systems (DCS)
  • Proficiency in programming and troubleshooting Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) systems
  • Thorough knowledge, skill, and hands-on troubleshooting and repair experience relating to instrumentation and control systems used in modern power stations, including burner management, combustion control, boiler controls, turbine controls, and machine condition monitoring.

  • Expertise in electrical systems used in modern power stations, including control centers, transformers, batteries, inverters, chargers, main generator, and excitation equipment.

  • Ability to work well with others and be self-directed, as well as apply creative solutions to unique I&E problems
  • Must be able to work from blueprints
  • Ability to use common computer programs such as Excel, Word, etc.
  • Excellent organizational, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license
