General Description

Under general direction, the NASA Headquarters Occupational Health Physician is responsible for the planning, direction, supervision, administration, and coordination of the medical services at the NASA Headquarters medical clinic in accordance with NASA policy and procedural documents. This position delivers a variety of professional medical services including pre-employment medical examinations, health screenings and assessments, developing health and safety policies, and providing guidance on compliance with local and national regulations. There are approximately 1078 eligible employees at NASA Headquarters. This job requires on-site, five (5) days per week, clinic support during normal business hours.

How You Will Fulfill Your Mission

  • Provide health maintenance and occupational related examinations including pre-placement, surveillance, job certification, special purpose, and other examinations as medically necessary for civil service employee.
  • Ensure all medical services meet the requirements of NPR 1800.1, NASA Occupational Health Program Procedures; OSHA; Department of Transportation (DOT); Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC); and other regulatory agencies.
  • Administer First aid treatment and emergency care will be given to visitors who become ill or are injured on the NASA Headquarters site.
  • Foster and mentor staff on continuous improvement to find more efficient and effective methods of health care and wellness delivery.
  • Provide medical advice to senior personnel at NASA Headquarters, to include emergent health issues for hazards in the work environment or other job-related conditions.
  • Serve as the Medical Review Officer (MRO) for the NASA HQ Drug Free Workplace Program.
  • Assist the program manager in the development, tracking, managing, and interpretation of direct labor and material costs.
  • Ensure compliance with Federal, State, and local laws, regulations, contractual and customer requirements along with any other specialized program requirements throughout the center.
  • Ensure operational compliance with OSHA, VPP, HIPAA, State Health Department, and other mandated regulatory or conformance regulations/standards, as well as NASA and US Space Force local and agency requirements.
  • Serve as the privileging authority for all credentialed medical providers and technicians at NASA Headquarters.
  • Serve as the subject matter expert and primary advisor to NEMCON and HSG leadership for all medically related impacts to execution of services.

Specific Knowledge/Certification Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD)
  • Graduate of an accredited U.S. medical school (or equivalent)
  • Board-eligible or certified in Internal Medicine, Preventive Medicine, Emergency Medicine, or other pertinent specialty.
  • Licensed to practice in the District of Columbia
  • At least five years of experience as a physician in an occupational medicine program and three years of experience in management of an occupational medicine program.
  • Experience managing privileges and maintenance of credentials for health care workers at all levels in an outpatient clinic setting and pre-hospital care.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in reading electrocardiograms.
  • Familiar and experience with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Occupational Health and safety policies and standards.
  • Ability to thrive in a team atmosphere and effectively work with all levels of employees.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends, when necessary.
  • Proficient in use of Electronic Health Records.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in NASA Occupational Health and safety policies.
  • Prior experience delivering health care in a Federal Government Organization.
  • Current Medical Review Officer (MRO) certification for drug and alcohol testing.
