UC Health is hiring a Part-Time OB Technician for the Labor & Delivery department for 12 Hour PM shift at UC Medical Center.
The Labor & DeliveryOB Technician will support UC Medical Center's Labor & Delivery unit. They will be delivering high-quality care to patients based on assessed needs. This role requires excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, and the ability to assist in a circulator role under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse.

Responsibilities
The OB Technician is responsible for assisting registered nurses in the provision of basic patient care. The OB Technician needs to demonstrate working knowledge of reasons for tests, procedures, treatments and potential signs and symptoms of complications. It is also someone who demonstrates the knowledge and skills to provide for the physical, psycho/social, safety, cultural, and related patient needs appropriate to the age of the patients of the clinical population served.

  • Gives clear instructions to patients/family regarding treatment. Involves family/guardian in the assessment, initial treatment, and continuing care of the patient. Identifies any physical limitations of the patient and deploys intervention when necessary. Recognizes and responds appropriately to patients/families with behavioral health problems. Interprets population related data and plans care appropriately. Identifies and responds appropriately to different needs resulting from, unique psychological needs or those associated with religious/cultural norms. Performs treatments, administers medication, or operates equipment safely. Recognizes and responds to signs/symptoms of abuse or negligence.
  • Incorporates patient safety and comfort to transport patient to/from other areas as directed; provides backup transport services to any department and/or other unit and/or assists with discharging patients home.
  • Facilitates patient/family orientation through explaining steps of the call signal, visitor policy, location of visitor lounge, mealtimes, cafeteria location and hours, coffee shop location and hours.
  • Reports to the RN and documents all pertinent patient information accurately, concisely, timely, and charting/documentation is done according to hospital policy/procedure.
  • Participates in care planning and outcome evaluation with team members through change of shift report activities, ongoing communication/documentation, etc. Posts appropriate patient care signage (e.g., hearing impaired, isolation, etc. in patient's room).
  • Facilitates transfers and discharges, collects patient's personal belongings, assists patient to wheelchair or stretcher, accompanies patient to new room and/or discharge area. Reinforces patient instructions for clinical and equipment issues.
  • Ensures patient identification through the application and monitoring of Patient ID band placement. Initiates and maintains all procedures related to infant security. Ensures beds are in appropriate position and locked at all times; ensures that side rails remain in up position as indicated. Maintains safety standards and use of proper body mechanics while assisting patients in moving, sitting, or ambulating. Ensures that patients are secured appropriately when transported by wheelchairs/stretchers.
  • Assists in maintaining a clutter-free patient room and ensures necessary supplies and equipment are available and acceptable. Checks personal protective boxes in each room. Checks oxygenated prams and isolettes for oxygen. Ensures that necessary equipment is in patient room and is in working order; appropriate department for repair as needed. Ensures that needed articles are within patient's reach. Verifies and orders unit stock and materials as necessary.
  • Performs scrub duties for obstetrical surgical cases, demonstrates knowledge of care and use of all equipment, instruments and supplies used for surgical procedures. Assists with vaginal deliveries (places legs in stirrups, scrubs perineum, and drapes patient. Performs bedside glucose finger sticks. Performs Q.C. on lab instruments. Gives enemas, applies vaginal pads, hot/cold compresses, ace bandages, and antiembolic stockings/pneumo boots. Assist physician or nurse midwife with procedure as directed. Performs ADL (e.g. baths, linen changes, etc.). Assists with ambulation, turning, and positioning. Applies over-bed trapeze and over-bed frame. Responds rapidly, calmly, and appropriately during emergencies, initiates CPR and provides for necessary items requested. Applies pneumatic stockings or boots. Transports newborns to nursery.
  • Performs vital signs (temperature, pulse, respirations, and BP). Measures and records patient intake and output. Circulation - pulses with or without doppler, skin temperature, and color. Reports changes in neurologic status: changes from alert and oriented or change in gross motor function. Observe skin integrity (redness, swelling, etc.) while completing baths, repositioning, linen changes, etc. Reports patient complaints about IV site, observes that IV continues to flow. Specimen Collection: Collect strained urine specimens: routine, clean-catch, catheter, 24 hr. Strain urine as ordered. Ensure appropriate processing of specimen: labeling, transport, computer order entry (CPOE). Labels placentas for pathology. Gathers specimens for cord pH. Draws PKUs (Metabolic Screening Test) on newborns 24 hours after birth. Draws labs on OB & GYN patients and sends to lab.

Qualifications
Education and Experience Requirements:
  • High school graduate or GED required.
  • BLS certification- within 60 days of hire
  • STNA preferred; successful passage of 80 hours of State Tested Nurse Aide Training; 40 hours of Acute Medical-Surgical Training, Specialty Training and Hospital Specific Training or a Student from an NLN accredited RN program having successfully completed one Medical-Surgical rotation or another acute rotation.
  • Medical Assistant or previous operating room preferred.
