GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT: 

The Nurse Manager is a registered nurse who reports to the department of OB/Gyn director of nursing.  They are responsible for the management and oversight of daily clinical operations and for creating a safe, healthy environment that supports the work of the health care team and contributes to patient engagement.  The Nurse Manager is instrumental in creating a professional environment fostering a culture where interdisciplinary team members contribute to optimal patient outcomes and grow professionally.

The Nurse Manager oversees the clinical staff in the department coordinating staffing resources to ensure care follows local, state, and federal regulations and accreditation standards.  They collaborate with other departments and specialties to coordinate care across disciplines and between the outpatient and inpatient areas.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

1.      Management and evaluation of clinical services and operations, including but not limited to nursing functions (i.e. triage, infection control, and patient education) and workforce management.

         Design, evaluate and monitor practice to ensure service excellence, operational efficiency, and maximization of the function of all role groups in their managerial scope. 

         Coordinate scheduling and operations to adequate coverage and the smooth flow of daily clinical workflows.

         Secure resources for staff.

         Train and supervise staff.  Monitor and maintain clinical competencies for their department.

         Manage resources within a unit budget.  Oversee supply inventory management system. Oversee the delivery of facility administered medications.

         Interview, recruit, and hire direct reports. Participate in the interviewing and hiring decisions for other practice staff in collaboration with other department leadership.

         Conduct annual performance evaluations for direct reports and as appropriate. Constructively contribute to performance evaluations for other workforce in collaboration with other department leadership.

         Implement corrective action as needed in consultation with nursing director and HR as indicated.

         Oversee the onboarding and training of direct reports including RN's, LPN's, and MA's

         Investigate, evaluate, and manage MGH safety reports.

         Assure staff provide competent, compassionate patient-and-family-centered nursing care utilizing the nursing process, and interdisciplinary teamwork.

         Utilizing their assessment, critical reasoning and clinical judgment, the Nurse Manager expedites the delivery and/or delegation of appropriate care and treatment to the patient.

         Regularly review staff clinical documentation to ensure quality and timeliness of completion.

         Actively empowers staff to manage their professional lives, address conflict and participate in the work environment.

         Demonstrate and mentor behavior of respect and support for patient and family cultural beliefs, values, individual needs, health goals and treatment preferences.

 

2.      Collaborate with all members of the health care team to ensure coordination of care.

         Review and follow-up with members of the health care team to ensure patients receive the necessary care.

         Design and implement a system of communication with members of the health care team, including but not limited to in-patients and/or in the community to ensure continuity in care transitions.

         Actively engaged in creating a healthy, safe, respectful work environment.

 

3.      Provide leadership in the practice along with their leadership colleagues to ensure safe, efficient, and cost-effective care.

         Maximize the role of all staff, including mentoring staff to ensure success, effectiveness, and efficiency.

         Evaluate cultural sensitivity and manage issues related to inclusivity within staff, the unit and/or patients.

         Identify opportunities, and solutions, to ensure a safe, efficient, and cost-effective practice environment.

         Generate innovative ideas to improve care delivery and workflow in the practice environment. Participate and/or leads committees to improve practice performance.

         Precepts and mentors' new members of the clinical team and emerging leaders.

         Lead, spread, and sustain regular performance improvement activities.

         Annually discusses career development opportunities with clinical staff.

         Implement and evaluate nursing activities as part of Magnet designation.

 

4.      Professional Development

         Maintain and update clinical knowledge and skills based on current nursing and nursing management practice.

         Adhere to departmental requirements for required training.

         Identify specific learning needs and goals; collaborate with the nursing director in developing a plan to meet them.

         Identify and facilitate learning opportunities for themselves and staff.

         Participate in leadership development activities.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, and/or REGISTRATIONS:

Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts required.

EDUCATION:  

Graduate of an accredited nursing program.

Must have a minimum of a bachelor's degree in nursing.

SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED: 

BLS Certification or demonstrated proficiency.

Organizational (executive function) skills

Strong communication and interpersonal skills

Ability to rapidly make sound decisions with uncertain information.

Ability to analyze, interpret and present information.

Demonstrated ability to teach and develop others.

EXPERIENCE:

Previous experience as a supervisor, coordinator, or managerial, experience precepting new nurses or emerging leaders required.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

Supervise the scheduling, performance, and development of medical assistants, licensed practical nurses, registered nurses, and any other staff as defined by the unit and within the Nurse Manager's scope of function.

FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY:

Unit budget with focus on direct and indirect reports, consumable supplies, and pharmacy utilization.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Oversee patient care in Waltham and urogynecology in Danvers.
