Intro to the Nurse Manager Position
A primary purpose of this role is to manage the clinical staff (nurses, medical assistants, and front desk) in order to provide excellent healthcare in New Orleans’ medically under-served communities. This position includes leading in hiring, training, managing, and deploying the clinic staff, which is key to fulfilling our mission. This position works in coordination with the practice manager as well as the quality coordinator. Working with this team approach ensures that our team can actualize the goal of “always improving” as we fulfill our mission.

The Nurse/Clinical Manager will be responsible for the daily staffing of the current 6 sites as well as any new sites
Another primary purpose of this Nurse/Clinical Manager role is to excel in quality and risk reduction. BCHS has a long history of active QIQA and Risk Management committees, and as we grow we desire to excel even more in these areas. This position is key to working with our practice manager and other clinical leadership to improve our team's skills and processes. This allows our team to improve our quality of care, our performance on markers of quality, our efficiency, and our risk management. This position has a hands-on role in implementing improvement plans and sustaining a culture of improvement.
Compensation:Compensation starts at 70,000-82,000 based on highest level of experience
Job Description: Nurse Manager
The position requires an experienced and seasoned clinical leader who has the confidence to effectively express leadership in a multi-site community health clinical setting, while building TEAM across a diverse grouping of staffing levels. The position impacts people, systems, policies and protocols. The position will lead both formally and informally, requiring strong interpersonal skills, leadership, and effective coaching abilities. As an important operational leader functioning between medical providers and other clinical staff, the position is best suited for a leader who enjoys attention to detail and in-clinic management of systems, processes and people.
Reporting to the BCHS Chief Medical Officer, the Nurse Manager will be responsible for:
1. LEADERSHIP
The Nurse Manager Position is a clinical leadership position which will:
A. Execute effective management at BCHS clinic sites with a goal of optimal workflow processes and optimal staff performances at all clinical sites according to establishedBCHS policies and protocolsB. Lead in implementing and maintaining BCHS policies and protocolsC. Responsible for supervision of all non-provider clinical staff, i.e. medical assistants, front desk staff, registered nursesD. Demonstrate leadership through the evaluation and measurement of clinical systems and people, operating with data analysis when appropriateE. Help build support for the continued integration of behavioral health and primary care teamsF. Always promote the values and culture of BCHS
2. ACTIVE MANAGEMENT & TRAINING OF PEOPLE AND SYSTEMS
The Nursing Manager will provide in-clinic, day to day, quality control of people and systems that ensures BCHS standards of excellence are implemented, accomplished and administered.
A. Supervise, evaluate and ensure the smooth and efficient running of BCHS clinical sites- Supervises and ensures daily efficient clinical flow, effective monitoring of clinical systems, and excellent patient care delivery- Work in coordination with BCHS providers, practice manager, quality coordinator and clinic staff to ensure daily clinic processes are operating efficiently.- Addresses provider clinical needs when unmet by staff or current systems
B. General supervision of clinical staff:- Manage daily staffing- Lead in the interview process of new clinical staff- Orientation and skills training of clinical staff- Participates in credentialing: helps ensure up to date documentation of staff certifications- Disciplinary actions as needed- Develops and schedules clinical staff education and skills training opportunities
C. Coordinates with Chief Medical Officer and participates on QIQA committee to help achieve improvement goals- Working together to implement quality improvement projects (UDS measures, referral processes, safety issues)- Investigation and response to patient grievances as needed including those related to medical issues - Investigation of incident reports as needed including those related to labs and medical issues
D. Ensure that BCHS follows safe standards in clinical skills and care (ie. the 5 rights)
E. Regularly evaluate each clinic location in coordination with the practice manager, to define and uphold optimal processes:- Ensuring quality care is delivered- Manage daily clinic flow- Medication management and inventory- Medical supply inventory- Inventory/McKesson ordering approval
F. Supervise and complete evaluations on individual performance. This includes:- Utilizing RN team members to respond to nurse-level patient care issues and other clinical responsibilities- Trains and evaluates staff’s clinical skills; coordinates with practice manager on evaluation measures that can be data report-based- Oversees the referral process: Helps ensure effective oversight of referral coordinator, such that expected standards are upheld- Quality control on check-in and check-out process: train, supervise and perform evaluations on the patient check-in and check-out processes- Supports optimal EMR utilization
3. COMMUNICATION
This clinical leader will serve as a vital link of communication across the health center and coordinate the work of people helping build TEAM effectiveness. Knowledge, skills and ability to serve as an effective Nurse Manager are essential requirements of this position.
A. Develops routines of effective, team-building communication across a growing number of sites (examples include morning huddle)
B. Managing the clinical staff
C. HR issues- effectively promote the use of our HR team when needed to attend to the needs or concerns of our staff team member
