Summary 

The Spaulding Nurse Clinical Leader (NCL) champions point-of-care delivery that is patient and family-centric, evidence-based, and team oriented.  The NCL leads and supports direct caregivers by influencing clinical practice and organizational processes for optimal care outcomes. The Spaulding NCL leads at the unit or program level and across the continuum of post-acute care.  They strive to advance and integrate nursing care as a vital element of an interprofessional approach to care planning and delivery.  The NCL infuses a culture of inquiry into their practice and the practice of others. 

 

For Nurse Clinical Leaders who assume supervisory responsibility, they are responsible for administrative, operational, and clinical responsibilities for all services in the facility on evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. They actively manage nursing staffing to ensure safe staffing levels and budgetary constraints are met. They also oversee admission and discharge functions and serve as primary contact for the facility's internal and external customers. The Nurse Clinical Leader/ Supervisor provides leadership, supervision, and serve as a role model to staff ensure adherence to standards of clinical excellence and opportunities for professional development.  In addition, they monitor practice to ensure compliance with licensing and accrediting agency standards and participate in hospital committees and the performance improvement process.  

 

Key Responsibilities 

 

Leadership/ Supervisory Responsibilities 

  • Is a consistent presence at the point of care, interacts directly with nurses, staff, and clinical teams. 

  • Responsible for Leader Standard Work and Key Performance Indicators as assigned. 

  • Encourages and guides the development of others by serving as a daily mentor, coach, and role model. 

  • Acts as a change agent involving direct care staff in change initiatives, demonstrating personal commitment, and addressing barriers that may impede success. 

  • Committed to staff involvement in clinical decision making. 

  • Skillfully delegates and manages nursing team resources in care-related activities. 

  • Is an effective clinical team leader, communicator, and capable problem solver. 

 

These additional key responsibilities apply to Nurse Clinical Leaders who assume Supervisory Responsibility: 

  • Administrative, operational and clinical responsibilities is assumed for all services in the facility on evenings, nights, weekends, and/or holidays.  Appropriate use of resources is demonstrated. 

  • Adequate staffing is ensured to meet coverage demands. 

  • Nursing staff supervision, support and mentoring are provided to promote staff development and adherence to the standards of clinical excellence. 

  • Appropriate intervention is demonstrated in all situations, e.g., deterioration of patient condition, disruptive behavior, equipment malfunctions, etc. 

  • Observations related to staff performance are shared with the appropriate Nurse Manager/ Director.  Participates in staff performance reviews as per organizational guidelines. 

 

Evidence-Based Practice 

  • Role models the use of evidence in daily point-of-care practice. 

  • Scans for the most recent evidence to manage the patient population served. 

  • Facilitates the implementation of evidence-based practice and champions projects by monitoring progress, providing feedback, removing barriers and offering encouragement. 

  • Provides meaningful recognition of those staff and mentors who engage in evidence-based practice. 

  • Encourages the interprofessional team in the use of evidence in care delivery and transition planning. 

  • Along with the Nurse Director, support staff in EBP work. 

 

Clinical Education 

  • In collaboration with leaders and educators, disseminates educational topics for continuous learning and changes in practice. 

  • With leaders and educators, identify opportunities for unit-based changes and assesses the educational needs of the staff. 

  • Provides, teaches, coaches and assists with complex care delivery and in emergencies. 

  • Applies and teaches clinical judgment and decision-making skills for use in care delivery. 

  • Offers guidance and assistance to staff in their progression on the clinical ladder and other professional development opportunities. 

 

Quality and Safety 

  • Assesses with the care team daily risk for infection, pressure ulcers, pneumonia, missed care, or other nurse-sensitive indicators while taking steps to decrease the risk of their occurrence. 

  • Educates others and facilitates the use of data among care team members to inform decisions and evaluate patient outcomes. 

  • Positively impacts key patient outcomes. 

  • Rounds on patients recognizing changes in their condition that require attention by the interprofessional team 

  • Works with administrative leaders to address issues stemming from safety reports including near misses or errors that occur to address the problem and improve processes.

 

Interprofessional Practice 

  • Collaborates with the interprofessional team regarding patient progress updates and transitions/discharge planning. 

  • Acts as a resource to the primary nurse in their participation in family team meetings. 

  • Engages with the interprofessional team in a collaborative approach to patient teaching and care. 

  • Participates in interprofessional team meetings to disseminate information and participate in problem-solving and care planning. 

  • Guides staff in following the policies and processes designed for accessing consulting departments and services.

Qualifications and Experience

Education/Degree 

Required 

  • BSN 

Preferred 

  • Master's degree in nursing 

  •  Nursing Specialty Certification 

 
Experience 

Required 

  • A minimum of two years of diverse clinical experience required. 

Preferred 

  •  Experience relevant to the clinical specialties of the unit preferred.     

 

Licensure 

Required 

  • Current license from Massachusetts Board of Registration as Registered Nurse. 

 

Skills 

Required 

  • Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills, working with a diverse patient population. 

  • Team leadership experience 

  • Be able to work independently and contribute as a member of the interprofessional team. 

  • Able to anticipate challenges and be able to develop and implement strategies for addressing them. 

  • High level of services delivery, demonstrate initiative with the ability prioritize work, meet deadlines and adapt to changing situation. 

  • Possess effective verbal, electronic and written communication skills using the English language. 

  • Computer proficiency using Microsoft Office, with the ability and willingness to learn new software. 

  • Maintain a variable work schedule to meet the needs of those served by the role. 

 

Preferred 

  • Experience with evidence-based practice preferred. 

  • Clinical education or professional development experience preferred.
