Responsibilities
- Working as part of a team to provide daily administrative and engineering on-site support in analyzing, designing, implementing, and administering the Smithsonian's Cisco Network Infrastructure and associated network components. This will include but not be limited to the maintenance of the NOC Operations Manual which must be reviewed and approved by the COTR and OCIO Management on a bi-annual basis.
- Provide daily network infrastructure integrity checks and provide management with a report that outlines a) the status of the infrastructure, b) any problems that were found and were either rectified and/or must be rectified to include details of steps taken and/or that should be taken (must be clearly stated), and c) proactive measures that should be discussed with management so that optimal support can be provided to management and customers.
- Responsible for the management of network performance and end-to-end service quality for the Network infrastructure (i.e. analysis of bandwidth reports; coordination with NOC tools for improving performance, etc.). Use of Service Now ticketing tools in a NOC environment and demonstrate understanding of Incident, Change, Problem, and Request management practices.
- Monitors and responds to hardware, software, and network problems; oversees software and Security Patching; Utilizes software and hardware tools and identifies and diagnoses complex problems and factors affecting network performance.
- Troubleshoots network systems when necessary and makes improvements to the network. Provide technical advice for projects as they are rolled out (i.e. VLAN, network migrations, patching/vulnerabilities remedies)
- Troubleshooting, upgrading, and implementing Cisco Switches and Routers. Our OCIO team of Network Engineers, security operations analysts, web developers, and infrastructure architects work tirelessly to create innovative solutions.
- Maintenance of the Network Management Diagrams to include all CISCO Infrastructure components and associated network devices. Diagrams are maintained in a Microsoft Visio format. Creation of Network Infrastructure logbooks to house problem management documentation, change management documentation, and status checklists.
- Creation and maintenance of a Master Infrastructure Components List for the Smithsonian Institution detailing individual locations and configurations for all network infrastructure components.
- Work hours 6:30AM - 3:30PM 5 days a week (Tue, Wed, Thu, Fri and Sat) **shift assignment can change with advance notice**
Qualification
- MINIMUM of 6+ years of experience in an Enterprise Cisco LAN, WAN, or Wireless environment in support of at least 2,000 users or at least 4+ years’ experience working in a NOC environment
- Have current CCNP Routing and Switching or better certification.
- Microsoft Windows Server 2019/2022 experience a plus.
- Red hat Linux experience is a plus.
- Network Tools experience a plus (e.g. What's Up Gold, CACTI, Cisco Prime, APC InfraStruxure, Bluecat IP management, Splunk, Nedi, Nagios, ServiceNow)
- Cisco security-based certification a plus
- Must have expert knowledge of and skill in administering current CISCO Infrastructure components and associated network devices.
- Ability to be able to create access lists on routers for bandwidth utilization and security management, perform switch and router IOS (and/or Cat OS) and hardware upgrades, deploy new routers and switches, install memory and flash updates as needed to accomplish IOS (and/or NXOS) upgrades, and monitor and maintain the network utilizing SW/HW tools.
- Experience dealing with Cisco VPN management, RSA or Entrust background, and Cisco wireless networks.
- Familiar with routing protocols such as OSPF, EIGRP, and BGP routing protocols. Systems administration includes configuration, maintenance, troubleshooting, and resolution of any problems that arise.
- Solid understanding of and skill in applying TCP/IP and associated networking protocols such as SNMP, SMTP, POP, IMAP, HTTP, HTTPS, etc.
- A firm grasp on how infrastructure should be configured to maximize security throughout various infrastructure components such as Firewall, DMZ, VPN, etc.
- Be able to perform modifications to network management software (e.g. What's Up Gold, CACTI, Cisco Prime, APC InfraStuxure, Bluecat IP management, Splunk, Nedi, Nagios, etc.) as directed OCIO Management.
- Ability to generate, drive, and update problem-tracking tickets.
- Ability to work independently with a high degree of teamwork and cooperation with other members of the staff across the OCIO team and Smithsonian Customers.
- Strong interpersonal skills to work with customers daily.
