Position Objective
To provide assistance with maintaining, improving, and developing County Parks, Trails and the facilities they contain. This position is responsible for providing assistance with administrative, skilled trades work, technical assistance, coordinating tasks and successfully executing numerous and diverse natural resource and maintenance projects and overseeing seasonal maintenance staff and volunteers.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
These examples do not include all possible responsibilities in this position and do not limit the assignment of related duties to this classification.
1. Performs administrative, technical and manual tasks related to the establishment and maintenance of natural resource areas such as wetlands, direct hardwood seeding, lake shore, native prairie, and oak savannas following appropriate techniques and management plans.
2. Performs environmental and natural resource monitoring and inspections; prepares reports and plans relating to resource management; identifies corrective actions.
3. Assists with and monitors the implementation of contracts, monitors performance of select contractors and reviews pay requests.
4. Provides work direction and training for seasonal staff and temporary employees, program staff and volunteers dedicated to natural resource-based activities as assigned.
5. Develops, implements, promotes, and conducts outdoor education programs that advance outdoor education and recreation programs, awareness, and services.
6. Performs general facility construction and repairs including minor building construction, roofing, fencing, masonry, painting, framing, and carpentry to complete construction projects on time, within budget and in a safe manner.
7. Performs maintenance and improvement of park buildings, furnishings, landscapes, forests, grounds, roads and trails, and brushing and grooming of trails to maintain parks that are clean, safe, scenic and functional for the public.
8. Performs semi-skilled labor in the areas of plumbing, carpentry, welding, fabrication, and mechanical.
9. Performs equipment and machinery maintenance including routine safety inspections and servicing, preventative maintenance, unit inspections and maintenance record keeping ensuring safe and proper working condition of all tools and equipment.
10. Performs cleaning duties such as washing floors, walls, tables, grills, and toilets ensuring a pleasant and hygienic experience for the public.
11.Assists the Park Director with drafting budgets, habitat management plans, funding requests, technical documents and purchases related to natural resource management projects.
12. Performs various administrative duties related to natural resource-based projects.
13. Documents work activities, performs computer data entry, and utilizes computer databases.
14. Attends work regularly and in a timely manner.
15. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications and Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Minimum Qualifications
In order to be considered for this position, applicants must possess the following:


  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • Two-year Associates/Technical Degree in Natural Resources, park/recreation management, outdoor/environmental education or related field plus two years Natural Resources, environmental related experience OR six years of progressively responsible Natural Resources experience
  • Valid MN Driver’s License or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment
  • Class A CDL with Air Brakes, or ability to obtain within six months of employment
  • Non-Commercial Pesticide Applicator Category A, E, J and P License, Tree Inspector, Chainsaw certifications or the ability to obtain within 6 months of employment
  • First Aid/CPR/AED certification or the ability to obtain within six months of employment
  • Experience using Microsoft Office Applications

Preferred Experience Beyond Minimum Qualifications:
  • Working with Minnesota native wildlife and their historical habitats, invasive species control, turf grass, prairie, oak savanna, shrub and tree management
  • Working with GPS and ArcGIS Mapping software
  • Working with natural resource grant funding opportunities and administration
Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
1. Knowledge of native wildlife and their historical habitats, invasive species, turf grass, prairie, oak savanna, shrub and tree management.
2. Knowledge of turf grass, prairie, oak savanna, shrub, tree, and invasive species management including identification of trees, diseases and measures of control, proper use of fertilizers and chemicals.
3. Knowledge of basic surveying procedures and equipment.
4. Knowledge of basic construction practices and project implementation.
5. Knowledge of operating requirements, safety precautions, and routine maintenance requirements of power tools, vehicles, and equipment.
6. Knowledge of State and Federal DOT laws and regulations relating to the operation of truck trailer combinations.
7. Knowledge of safety rules, regulations, and practices.
8. Ability to develop and present successful environmental education programs.
9. Ability to communicate verbally and written, effectively present information and respond to questions from a wide variety of audiences, and exchange and/or convey technical information, interpersonal skills sufficient to exchange and or convey information.
10. Ability to develop, read, comprehend, and interpret technical documents.
11. Ability to provide and receive work direction and maintain effective working relationships.
12. Skilled in operation of trucks, tractors, and other industrial equipment.
13. Ability to perform heavy manual labor tasks requiring strength and coordination.
14. Ability to perform tasks requiring carpentry, electrical, masonry, plumbing, painting, metal welding and fabrication, and mechanical skills.
15. Ability to learn facilities computer systems.
16. Ability to perform data entry into various databases.
17. Ability to pay attention to detail and effectively organize time and anticipate, plan, and successfully respond to changing circumstances.
18. Ability to perform all job duties in compliance with safety guidelines and with an ongoing awareness of safety practices.
19. Ability to communicate courteously and professionally while maintaining positive working relationships with others when carrying out all job functions.

Work Environment and Physical Demands
The primary responsibilities for this position will be performed approximately 60% of the time indoors and approximately 40% of the time outdoors. Will require travel to off-site locations and occasional attendance at evening meetings. Will have some exposure to health hazards and accidents; requires a low to moderate level of physical effort, walks over uneven ground in varying work environments including swamps and dense woods. Hours of Work
This position has a normal work schedule of 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.; may include some hours outside of normal work hours on occasion.
