Salary Range: $19.57 - $25.48 Hourly

Hiring Range: $19.57 - $22.55 Hourly

Job Summary:

This technician will act under the direction of the NAT Crew Supervisor directly or through an assigned Technician II and is responsible for assisting in all grounds, building and maintenance activities. Tasks may include landscape maintenance, native vegetation management, hard surface maintenance, playground repairs and upkeep, snow removal, irrigation repairs, outdoor building maintenance, daily small equipment maintenance and special event assignments.

Experience, Knowledge, Skills:

Minimum Requirements:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • One to three (1-3) years knowledge of specific landscape native maintenance practices.
  • One to three (1-3) years knowledge of native vs. non-native and noxious plant species.
  • Valid driver’s license required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to recognize safety hazards in landscapes through visual inspection.
  • Ability to use all required safety equipment and take proper safety precautions, anticipate unsafe circumstances, and act accordingly to prevent accidents.
  • Knowledge of equipment such as, mower, blower, truck, plow, ATV, small tractor, etc.
  • Knowledge of GPS, GIS, and typical MS Office applications.
  • Snow removal best practices with various equipment.
  • Ability to rotate on-call and respond in a timely manner. May be assigned to various internal or external boards and committees.
  • Interpersonal skills, including the ability to facilitate interaction, communication, and teamwork between others.
  • Oral, written, and listening communication skills, including the ability to accurately interpret what others are saying and convey messages, information, concepts, and details accurately and clearly.
  • Ability to work under pressure, manage multiple concurrent and competing tasks and responsibilities, and adapt to changing priorities while maintaining personal effectiveness.
  • Ability to prioritize work, meet deadlines, and stay on task when completing special projects and daily assignments.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and reliable professional judgment, as well as collaboratively with a team to achieve desired results.

Essential Functions:

  • Repairs irrigation systems.
  • Fertilizes, applies herbicides and pesticides.
  • Edges sidewalks, strings trim, aerates, mows, shelter maintenance, brick paver repairs and site cleanup.
  • Maintains safety standards and visually inspecting equipment and site amenities daily.
  • Provides a consistent maintenance program which helps to improve native vegetation health, overall ecosystem function and image for the entire city.
  • Requires to frequently use gas-powered equipment during all seasons.
  • Uses all required safety equipment and take proper safety precautions, anticipate unsafe circumstances, and act accordingly to prevent accidents.
  • Assists with data collection for performance measures.
  • Assists with assigned snow removal routes and duties, at times on weekends, holidays, or outside typical business hours.
  • Provides support to other staff during peak times and with larger projects (snow removal, irrigation inventory, volunteer/service project and capital improvement projects).

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

Work Environment:

  • Frequent use of light or medium weight objects (e.g., 25-50 lbs.) and use of medium weight tools.
  • Employee must be able to work both indoors and outdoors in any weather condition.
  • Employee is subject to driving City vehicle in all weather conditions.
  • Employee may have frequent contact with the public
  • -in person, via email/telephone; and may experience adverse or confrontational situations with internal/external customers.
  • Requires ability to perform multiple tasks at one time with frequent interruptions.
  • Exposure to hazardous chemicals.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to move over rough, uneven and rocky surfaces in performance of grounds maintenance.
  • Vision enough to perform functions such as identifying materials necessary to complete maintenance on equipment and grounds and to operate vehicles and equipment.
  • Moderate to considerable physical effort that includes working from ladders in awkward positions.
