BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, play the piano to accompany choral groups and to perform related duties as required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
An Accompanist is required to be a musician with excellent piano training, experience and capability. His/her assignments are located at secondary schools within the District. Standard employment is on a part-time basis on days that school is in session. Some evening and weekend performances may be required.
Examples of Duties
Accompany choral groups by playing various voice parts simultaneously from a complete score or from an open score. E
Accompany and assist choirs at school and/or District functions. E
Keep music library records and properly categorize music; prepare reports as directed. E
Transpose and transcribe music as directed using appropriate equipment; duplicate and make tapes of vocal parts for choir use. E
Prepare music material for classroom use including copying parts, transposing, taping individual pieces and related aspects as required. E
Rehearse and prepare auxiliary accompanists such as drummer, bass player and guitar player as needed. E
Drill and tutor individuals or small groups of students; correct vocal harmonies during practice and encourage student involvement and participation. E
Communicate musical theory and concepts; correct student work and provide musical direction. E
Maintain files of sheet music in good condition. E
Consult with teacher on technical music decisions including discrepancies in scores, errors in music printing and related issues and concerns. E
Evaluate the balance on all electronic equipment for rehearsals and performances.
Set up and supervise the setting-up of instruments, monitors, amplifiers, microphones and related equipment; operate a variety of audio equipment; utilize listening software in music labs. E
Determine the need and schedule for piano tuning and repairs; operate and maintain an electronic piano. E
Operate a variety of musical and electronic equipment including a computer and assigned software. E
Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to: graduation from high school and two years of additional study in piano and harmony including one year of experience as an accompanist to soloists and choral groups utilizing a strong musical or piano background.
