POSITION SUMMARY/CLASS DESCRIPTION
BRIEF DESCRIPTION: Works with MPEA Natural Resource Manager (NRM) to develop and implement a comprehensive protocol for MPEA trail system assessment, repairs and improvements, and ongoing management and monitoring using accepted standards and practices to provide low-impact access while protecting the natural resources of the area. Work typically involves trail system assessment, repair, and improvement, assisting with the implementation of a comprehensive volunteer program, and conducting invasive species management and monitoring using accepted standards and practices. Participates in all aspects of natural resources management related to the MPEA. This position also performs maintenance of grounds and equipment and ensures that safety standards are met. Work weeks will follow a flexible, weekday schedule totaling 40 hours per week with occasional weekend and evening work required. Please note that this is a contingent (non-permanent, no benefits) position that is grant-funded.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Duties include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Performs trail system inspections, maintenance, and repairs. May assist with trail construction.
    1. Responsible for implementing a baseline trail system assessment, including measurements of running grade, cross slope, trail corridor height and width, and other variables
    2. Responsible for implementation of trail drainage repair projects
    3. Researches, develops, and implements an MPEA Trail Corridor Tree Care Plan to minimize the loss of trees due to hazardous tree removals by monitoring and acting upon factors which impact tree health (i.e. invasive vines, pests, and diseases)
    4. Works with the NRM to update the Trail Management section of the MPEA Integrated Natural Resource Management Plan
    5. Provides training and field supervision for Natural Resource Technicians assisting on the Trail System Assessment & Improvement Project
  • Assists the MPEA Natural Resources Specialist with the coordination and support of projects for volunteers, interns, students, and scout groups, etc.
    1. Leads diverse groups of volunteers in field activities including, but not limited to, Trail Maintenance Team, MPEA Weed Warriors, Master Naturalist projects, and flora and fauna monitoring programs.
    2. Assists with volunteer training programs, recognition events, and administrative support.
  • Collects biological data on the flora, fauna and abiotic components of the MPEA which may include vegetation surveys, invertebrate surveys, herpetological surveys, bird surveys, soil sampling, or stream sampling.
  • Assists the MPEA Natural Resource Managers with all aspects of early successional habitat creation and/or restoration
  • Assists with implementing invasive species control efforts utilizing techniques including, but not limited to, spraying, cutting, pulling, and mowing targeted invasive plant species
  • Follows monitoring protocols for measuring the effectiveness of invasive species control efforts
  • Performs and/or oversees various landscape maintenance activities such as mowing,
  • weeding, pruning, planting, etc.
  • Assists the MPEA Natural Resource Managers with other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's Degree in biology, Environmental Science, Wildlife Management, Natural Resources Management or other related field preferred. Working knowledge of biological and ecological principles and two years of practical experience. Possess two years of experience with maintenance, and installation of trail structures, and experience leading diverse groups of volunteers preferred. Experience identifying Maryland flora and fauna, and the ability to measure habitat variables is a plus, but training will be provided. Ability to use various computer software programs such as Word, Excel, Access, and Mapinfo. Must possess excellent writing skills for project proposals and updates, routine reports and correspondence.
SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS:
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow complex written and/or oral instructions, and to work independently or as a member of a team.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively and make safe and responsible decisions.
  • Operate a motor vehicle safely, capable of using a two-way radio and/or cellular phone.
  • Operate a variety of hand and power tools and equipment safely.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
  • Ability to perform heavy labor for prolonged periods of time.
  • Ability to work outdoors under varying conditions of weather.
  • Criminal background check, certified copy of driving record, and pre-employment physical required.
RATE OF PAY: Contingent - Professional - $19.50 per hour
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS
  • Must possess a valid Maryland Class C driver's license.
  • Must attend the required pesticide training and be registered with the MDA.
