Job description

We're looking for the best of the best:
As a fabricator at APE you will be working on complex fabricated assemblies every day. These could be parts for a rocket, a robot, a machine in a cutting edge factory, or a complex assembly for the military. To see some of what we can show check out apeamerican.com or our Instagram page https://www.instagram.com/ape.merican/

You will be challenged with complex geometry, tight tolerances, high finish standards, all while under tight time constraints. This job is for someone that not just has experience in this type of work, but loves the pleasure of completing a complex project that most fabricators cannot do.

You will work independently at times, or sometimes with a small team including engineers, machinist, and other fabricators to solve problems. Most projects are one-off so you must be able to use your experience and creativity to build something new almost every day.

On most projects you start with nothing but raw materials and utilize the shop drawings and relevant files to build a compete project step by step so understanding of shop drawings is a must.

Material types can range from .020" to 2" thick and be in aluminum, stainless, carbon, or other alloys. You will be working with sheetmetal, tubes, plates, and machined parts that will require precision fit-up, welding, and inspection.

A Precision Fabricator must be proficient at the following skills:

1) Understand shop drawings and be able to make parts to specification from a drawing with no guidance. You should have an understanding of weld symbols, GD&T, and other standard symbols.

2) Perform layout of plates, holes, bends, weldments, fixtures, etc. Knowledge of how to use layout tools like scribes, squares, tapes, protractors, calipers, etc. You must know how to fit-up complex shapes to high tolerance standards.

3) You must know how to set up a welding machine, diagnose problems, and make high quality welds consistently, and productively across a wide range of material types and thicknesses using both MIG and TIG.

4) You must be able to operate machines such as cold saws, band saws, drill presses, various types of grinders, and other machines to make parts to specification.

5) Along with all other employees you must maintain machines and tools in accordance with 5S methodology, industry standards, and company guidelines.

6) You must be organized and help keep the shop operating at the highest efficiency possible. Along with all other employees, you will have dedicated time each day to making improvements in the shop to improve your work environment to make it the best place to work in Texas. We want customers to be impressed by our shop, and we want employees that are proud of the shop that they operate.

7) MOST IMPORTANTLY A Precision Fabricator needs to be humble and ready to learn every day. Our shop is always looking for new techniques and processes to produce unique parts every day. No matter how much you already know, we are a team that needs team players that want to make everyone better.

Additional responsibilities of employees of American Precision Engineering include:

1) Assuring that the work being performed meets the quality control standards of the customer and the company through proper documentation.

2) Developing process improvements that make work easier, safer, better.

3) Continually develop your personal skill set in all aspects of your job.

4) Understand current trends and technology relevant to your position.

A typical day as a Precision Fabricator at APE could have you working on a wide range of project types. You could find yourself bending 16GA stainless sheetmetal on our CNC press brake in the morning for a robotics enclosure and building a high precision weldment from 3” carbon steel tube in the afternoon for an auto manufacturer. While other days you might be assembling a complex device for a aerospace company after all the parts have come back from powdercoat that could require a meticulous attention to detail and white glove treatment.

Every project at APE produces its own unique challenges, and as a Precision Fabricator you will play a leading role in solving them.

This job is not for everyone, but for the right person this a great position to learn and grow as a fabricator while you have the opportunity to work on a wide range of projects in a fast paced environment.
