POSITION TITLE: Medication Assisted Treatment Psychiatric MentalHealth Nurse Practitioner
DEPARTMENT: Health & Human Services (HHS) – Behavioral Health
LOCATION: Tukwila, WA
REPORTS TO: Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) Program Manager; Medical Director
FLSA STATUS: Exempt
SALARY RANGE: $162,991.23 - $244,486.84

Position Summary:

Offers comprehensive diagnostic assessment and treatment services to individuals experiencing symptoms associated with Mental Health and substance use difficulties. Provides psychiatric medication management and therapeutic interventions. Collaborates with a multi-disciplinary team of Mental Health, substance use disorder, and other providers and professionals. Adheres to HIPAA and confidentiality requirements. Honors and represents the mission, vision, and values of Cowlitz Indian Tribe and of the Cowlitz Tribal Health and Human Services department.

Working under the supervision of the Program Manager and Medical Director, and in, the person filling this position will:

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Performs comprehensive biopsychosocial diagnostic assessments to determine appropriate diagnosis and treatment plan.
  • Provides therapeutic and psychopharmacological interventions along with ongoing monitoring and management of clients’ level of functioning and treatment outcomes; utilizes appropriate measurements and mental status examination to validate DSM-V diagnosis.
  • Provides crisis intervention as needed including safety planning, relapse prevention planning, referral to community resources, and same-day evaluation and possible stabilization.
  • Participates as a member of a multi-disciplinary clinical team to staff cases and review progress, hurdles, feedback, and recommendations.
  • Coordinates care of clients with the referral source, family, and other organizations involved to further the effectiveness of treatment services.
  • Collaborates with other community services and resources to ensure continuity of care and achievement of treatment goals.
  • Utilizes appropriate measurements and mental status examination to validate results of the diagnostic assessment. Practices independently while consulting and collaborating with department staff and community partners.
  • Provides individual and family therapy for adolescents and adults as identified in treatment plan in an outpatient psychiatric setting based on respective training and standards of practice.
  • Develops an individualized, comprehensive treatment care plan in accordance with behavioral health care standards for clients and their families; monitors progress and adapts as needed.
  • Provides psycho education to clients, families, and significant others on topics including diagnosis, medications, and available resources while respecting client confidentiality.
  • Provides same-day evaluation and possible stabilization for clients in crisis and stabilizes or makes appropriate referrals to community crisis services.
  • Develops, implements, and maintains partnership with client, other health care providers, and community resources as applicable.
  • Maintains complete and accurate electronic health records and documents all client contacts and services provided in accordance with program policy and professional standards.
  • Practices in an independent role while consulting and collaborating with department staff and community partners.
  • Abides by all Cowlitz Indian Tribal laws and accreditation requirements with regard to utilization review and quality improvement directives including but not limited to: in-service training, peer review, performance improvement, and record maintenance.
  • Participates, as appropriate, in quality assurance programs; adheres to all safety regulations.
  • Provides consultation to agency nursing and medical staff.
  • Presents client cases in regularly scheduled case staffing meetings to discuss status, updates, collaboration, referral, deposition, consultation, and recommendations.
  • Maintains and practices confidentiality as required by HIPAA regulations regarding client confidentiality and request/release of information.
  • Participates in professional development and maintains required licensure and certification.
  • Participates in staff meetings as requested.
  • Adapts to changes in safety protocols and procedures.
  • Works collaboratively in a team environment to achieve shared goals.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of traditional form of government and tribal customs and traditions.
  • Knowledge of patient evaluation and plan of care procedures.
  • Knowledge of patient outreach services and activities.
  • Knowledge and understanding of clinical counseling principles, and methodologies in substance use disorder treatment and recovery support.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of psychiatric nursing, diagnosis and treatment planning, psychopharmacological interventions, and provision of psychotherapy.
  • Knowledge of community resources and referral agencies.
  • Skills in performing comprehensive biopsychosocial diagnostic assessments.
  • Skills in de-escalation and crisis intervention.
  • Skill in completing documentation in an electronic health record system.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to apply behavioral health counseling methods and techniques for children and adults.
  • Ability to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions and make individualized adaptions.
  • Ability to develop and offer educational presentations.
  • Ability to develop, implement, and evaluate the effectiveness of individualized services plans.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to build rapport quickly and effectively with clients and their families.
  • Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships and contribute to the creation of an inclusive environment.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and adapt quickly to changes in the work environment.
  • Ability to exercise independent clinical judgment, work individually, and collaborate in group settings.
  • Ability to exhibit ethics and integrity in all interactions and to uphold the organization’s values.
  • Ability to observe safety and security procedures
  • Ability to ensure work responsibilities are covered when absent, to be consistently on time to work, and to keep commitments.
  • Ability to maintain current course completion documentation for basic life support (BLS) through American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
  • Ability to diagnose psychiatric issues correlative to addiction/substance abuse and to effectively interact with patients to extract accurate information.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's or Doctoral Degree in Nursing.
  • Board-Certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner.
  • Licensed to provide services (ARNP and RN) in Washington state, for adults and children.
  • Three years’ experience providing services as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner.
  • BLS/CPR and AED certifications.
  • Experience working within American Indian and/or Alaska Native communities preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license is required when driving vehicles for work-related purposes.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a background screening / investigation according to the established requirements below.

  • Pre-employment drug screen.
  • Reference checks, education, and employment verification.
  • Federal, state, and/or tribal criminal history and sanction checks.
  • Has not been found guilty of, charged with, received a deferred sentence, received a conditional discharge of, or entered a plea of not contest to, or entered a plea of guilty to any one felony or misdemeanor crimes of violence, sexual assault, molestation, exploitation, or sexual contact; prostitution; or crimes committed against person(s) or children.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and talk or hear. The employee occasionally is required to stand; walk; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to lift up to 20lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and clarity of vision at long distance.

Work Environment:

Work is generally performed in an office/clinical setting with a moderate noise level. Employee may be exposed to bodily fluids, blood borne pathogens and infectious disease. Situations occur where PPE (personal protective equipment) is needed. Overnight travel and/or evening and/or weekend work may occasionally be required. Tight time constraints and multiple demands are common.
