Summary
We are seeking an experienced Radiation Oncology Coder to work with our Revenue Cycle Management team supporting the Radiation Oncology/Imaging business.
Responsibilities
- Enter appropriate codes for the transfer of data to billing files for reimbursement based on Medicare and payer guidelines.
- Analyze medical records and abstract clinical data by assigning codes (CPT, HCPCS) from patient records in accordance with coding classification systems in collaboration with physicians.
- Review and evaluate patient medical records to accurately assign procedure codes and modifiers with a focus on specialized services. Specialized services must include areas such as diagnostic, interventional radiology, and radiation therapy.
- Analyzes documentation to identify any documentation deficiencies which may warrant clinician review and clarification according to AAPC guidelines.
- Monitors regulatory and payer changes as they apply to diagnostic and procedure coding.
- Researches and resolves coding related system edits, payer rejections and insurance denials.
- Identify system edits, payer rejection and insurance denial trends for policy and procedure improvement.
- Maintains knowledge of the current changes of coding practices by continuing education and reading resource material.
- Meet or exceed department production and accuracy standards.
- Demonstrate the ability to communicate clearly and effectively by phone, system notes, email, etc.
- Detail-oriented with a focus on quality in accomplishing tasks.
- Critical thinking/problem solving; ability to break down a situation into smaller pieces to identify key/underlying issues.

- Demonstrates basic understanding of billing system.

- Performs daily coding activities to ensure successful processing and payment of claims.
- Reviews patient medical charts and documentation for accuracy and reports missing or incomplete documentation to provider organization in a timely manner.
- Performs audits on previously coded claims batches and makes all necessary corrections to ensure accuracy.
Qualifications
- 3+ years Coder work experience
- 2+ years of Radiation Oncology coding experience
- Some college preferred
- Current nationally recognized coding credential including, but not limited to CPC, COC, CCS, CCS-P
- Additional certifications (CHOC, CEMC, etc.) preferred
- Understanding of ICD-10, CPT (including E/M leveling), HCPCS, modifiers, medical terminology, anatomy & physiology
- Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams and EMR applications (EPIC, CERNER, etc.) a plus
- Ensures accuracy of billing codes per AAPC/AMA guidelines as well as payer updates and ensures all billing codes are current and active
- Possess strong written and verbal communication skills to communicate effectively with stakeholders at all levels of the organization
- Ability to work under general supervision
- Ability to work in a fast-paced department and handle multiple tasks, work with interruptions, and deal effectively with confidential information
- Possess excellent telephone etiquette, presentation skills and problem resolution skills
- Must be highly organized and detail-oriented
- Understands fully the requirements to meet HIPAA regulations. Must treat all patient information and data with complete confidentiality and take all precautions to secure this information
- Preferred hybrid; office is based in Beverly Hills, CA. Must be based in California. No out of state applicants please.
