Title: Senior Mechanical Engineer
Location: San Mateo County, CA
Duration: Longtetrm Contract
Job Description:
1. The Senior Mechanical Engineer reports to the Manager, Engineering Stations, and Facilities, and is responsible for utility planning, technical design, construction, and maintenance support for the Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board (Caltrain).
2. Perform Mechanical engineering for Caltrain stations and facilities related to planning, designing, construction and operations, as well as engineering direction for design and maintenance of electrical, utility systems, tunnel ventilation systems serving Caltrain stations and facilities.
3. Provide technical, compliance, and performance oversight of utility systems and plans serving the commuter rail environment.
4. Develop and implement standards, procedures, and safety protocols for the testing, maintenance, and operation of mechanical and electric equipment, including the review and approval of equipment testing and maintenance reports.
5. Oversight of third-party managers, consultants, and contractors to provide mechanical and electrical engineering direction and review of utility systems related stations and facilities.
6. Provide a review of maintenance and construction activities to ensure return-to-service requirements are met.
7. Ensure utilities serving Caltrain stations and facilities are in a state of good repair, and that mechanical and electrical systems comply with regulatory requirements (NFPA, AREMA, CPUC, etc.) and Caltrain Engineering Standards.
8. Review mechanical project documents (plans, specs, calculations, cost estimates) from design consultants for compliance with project criteria, applicable codes and standards, and contract requirements.
9. Support Caltrain construction management team by providing responses to Request for Information (RFI) relating to construction of project utility systems and confirming project as-built construction drawings provided by project contractor are accurate.
10. Perform regular project site visits to inspect construction of utility systems to ensure contractor compliance with approved project drawings and specifications, applicable engineering codes, and Caltrain standards.
11. Support Caltrain operations management team by investigating failures of utility systems and recommend corrective actions and preventative measures.
12. Performing periodic inspection of utilities serving Caltrain stations and transit facilities for compliance with current engineering codes and provide recommendations for modernization of systems.
13. Promote safety awareness of utility systems serving Caltrain stations and transit facilities in addition to developing procedures to reduce or eliminate accidents. Collaborate with equipment manufacturers and vendors to train facility technicians on preventative maintenance methods and corrective repair procedures.
14. Perform all job duties and responsibilities in a safe manner to protect oneself, fellow employees, and the public from injury or harm. Promote safety awareness and follow safety procedures to reduce or eliminate accidents.
Skills:
1. Sufficient experience, training and/or education to demonstrate the knowledge and ability to successfully perform the essential functions of the position. In lieu of a degree, work-related experience that demonstrates the skills and experience necessary to perform this role will be accepted. Development of the required knowledge and abilities is typically obtained through but not limited to a bachelor's degree in engineering (mechanical) or a related field, or four (4) years of full-time progressively responsible engineering related experience in a transit, MEP engineering firm or a public agency.
2. Professional Engineer's license.
3. Understanding of applicable rail, transit, and municipal codes and standards.
4. Working knowledge and experience of Federal and State transportation regulations and programs.
5. Knowledgeable in asset management.
6. At least two years of experience involving independent responsibility for a wide variety of technical engineering, such as mechanical and electrical design for the tunnels.
7. Work experience on AutoCAD.
8. Ability to support GIS systems.
