Job description

Hill Air Force Base employs approximately 2,000 Civilian Scientists and Engineers to support the Air Force’s mission to fly, fight and win…in air, space and cyberspace. Employees acquire, sustain, modernize, and test some of the nation’s most powerful and technologically advanced weapon systems, including fighter jets, bombers, radar, ICBM’s, and satellite systems.

Hill AFB currently has a vacancy for an experienced Mechanical/Process Engineer in the Commodities Maintenance Group at the Ogden Air Logistics Complex. This is a civilian position working directly for the Department of the Air Force.

Duties may include: Developing, improving, and documenting mechanical maintenance & repair processes for aircraft components and systems; designing process specific tooling and fixtures; leading investigations on failed aircraft parts to identify root cause and corrective actions; defining requirements for industrial process equipment purchases and providing technical oversight for the Government contracts team; and working with mechanics, machinists, technicians, and other personnel to reduce costs and improve quality.

To successfully compete for this position, candidate must have the ability to operate at a journeymen level across a diverse skill set. Ideal candidate will:

  • Have a background in machining and/or grinding and/or assembly of aerospace components.
  • Have the ability to act autonomously, self-identify projects, and work with minimal guidance or oversight.
  • Have the ability to establish Industrial Process Control (IPC) within an aircraft maintenance and overhaul operation. Candidate must have competency to: reduce costs, reduce defects, reduce flow times, and increase quality of items repaired by technicians on the shop floor; as well as have the ability to generate and track metrics to show improvement. To accomplish this, candidate will be required to: identify gaps and/or errors in customer provided technical data and work with different customer organizations to get them corrected, develop standardized methods and/or processes to perform repair operations so all shop personnel across all shifts are able to perform the same operation identically, develop and implement engineering controls to ensure operator safety and product repeatability through all phases of a repair operation, ability to interpret Government and/or industry specifications (OSHA, AMS, SAE, MIL-STD, etc.), develop methods of repair compliant with them, and communicate those requirements to technicians on the shop floor.
  • Have the ability to provide cradle-to-grave tool and fixture design. Competency across the following functions is necessary: solid modeling, 2-D drafting, use of GD&T, tolerance stack up analysis, structural analysis, material selection, oversee fabrication and make red-line drawing changes as appropriate, maintain revision management and configuration control of design package, lead validation/verification exercise with tool on the shop floor, and provide training to shop personnel as applicable.
  • Have the ability to lead an investigation into a failed part, identify root cause and corrective action(s), document all findings into a written report, brief multiple layers of leadership, and oversee implementation of corrective actions necessary to restore operations across the production line in a timely manner.
  • Have the ability to write technical portions of Government contracts (e.g. contracts to purchase shop equipment or outsource repair operations), follow those contracting efforts through their entire lifecycle, and be able to maintain enough awareness about their status that short, oral, briefings can be given to leadership with minimal notice.
  • Have the ability to establish and maintain relationships across a diverse range of people: from technicians on the shop floor, to tele-relationships with counterparts at other Military Bases, to senior leaders within the Organization and the ability to use those relationships to get projects accomplished.
  • Have the ability to manage multiple projects at the same time. This includes long term (multi-year) projects that are often idle while waiting for input from outside organizations. Candidate must have the ability to actively engage in short term projects while strategically managing long term projects. Successful candidates will have the ability to identify new projects and prioritize them based on return on investment as extra time becomes available.

Benefits:

  • Job Stability and standard 40 Hour Work Weeks
  • Compensation for Over-time
  • Paid Leave: 10 Holidays, 13 Sick Days, 13-26 Vacation Days (depending on time in service)
  • Affordable Health, Vision, Dental, and Life Insurance Plans
  • Participation in 401k style Thrift Savings Plan (up to 5% agency matching) and Federal Employees Retirement System Pension
  • Free Base Gym Access
  • Close to Mountains, Lakes, National Parks, and Downtown SLC

Requirements:

Applicants must be US Citizens to apply.

Applicants must have an ABET accredited bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering. Additional consideration will be given to candidates with graduate degrees and post-graduate experience. For this position, Engineering Technology degrees will not be accepted.

Ideal applicants will have 3+ years’ of directly related experience beyond award of bachelor’s degree, however all experience levels will be considered. Payband for candidates with 3+ years of experience starts at $86,962 annually.
