Job description

The Mechanical Designer is responsible for injection molding tool and fixture development, design, and implementation activities within the areas of new product development and on-market product with a focus on small development projects in coordination with design engineering, project management, manufacturing engineering, and operations. Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to the management of CIVCO's preventative maintenance tooling process, developing and implementing improved methods of manufacturing, procedures, and processes which result in improved efficiencies, yields, machine operations and quality. This position is non-exempt and is at the manufacturing facility in Kalona, IA with plans for relocation to Coralville in 2025.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. (Other duties may be assigned.)
Mechanical Design:

  • Tool design and manufacturing resource for small new product development projects including tooling development, design for manufacturability, manufacturing cost estimates, drawing creation, prototyping, manufacturing router creation, and production transfer.
  • Coordinates and executes design for manufacturing reviews.
  • Coordinates and executes process validation for small new product development projects.
  • Improve and standardize departmental and organizational processes by working with cross-functional teams focusing on Six Sigma and Lean Manufacturing methodologies.
  • Designs and develops complex fixtures, assemblies, templates, and other manufacturing aids to increase manufacturing yield and throughput.
  • Analyze new manufacturing processes to determine if manufacturing in-house or outsourcing is the most effective option.
  • Manages CIVCO's preventative maintenance tooling program.

Quality Assurance:
  • Generates and updates quality system (e. standard operating procedure and work instruction) and project related documentation as needed (i.e. qualification protocols/report, design history file documents, work orders, charters).

  • Understands and follows engineering related and overall company processes.
  • Understand and executes manufacturing responsibilities within a regulated quality system such as ISO 13485.

Sourcing:
  • Assist in the validation and technology transfer of CIVCO processes to quality, cost-effective, and reliable suppliers.
  • Assist in the development of product and process requirements including raw materials, components, finished product, tooling, fixtures, equipment, and manufacturing systems.

Other Skills and Abilities:
  • Demonstrates design, documentation, materials management, and design for manufacturing skills.
  • Demonstrates troubleshooting abilities, effective communication skills, and attention to detail.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams, PowerPoint)
  • Experience with Computer-Aided Design (CAD) tools (including 3D modeling), PTC Creo Parametric and PTC Windchill.
  • Experience with manufacturing processes; including injection molding, machining, and mechanical assembly.
  • Regular, predictable attendance is required for the ability to complete all work.
  • Requires face-to-face interaction with team members, peers, and management to complete work and provide support.
  • Ability to work more than 40 hours per week (overtime) if needed based on business demand.
  • Ability to demonstrate and promote CIVCO Values.

Education and/or Experience
Minimum of a high school diploma or GED; and three to five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Associate degree (A.S.) in science or related certificate from an accredited community college and/or technical institute is preferred.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals and the risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
