Job Description

The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) is a world-class fusion energy research laboratory managed by Princeton University for the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science. PPPL is dedicated to developing the scientific and technological knowledge base for fusion energy. The Laboratory advances the fields of fusion energy and plasma physics research to develop the scientific understanding and key innovations needed to realize fusion as an energy source for the world. As an important part of its mission, PPPL operates the National Spherical Torus eXperiment (NSTX) fusion device located in Princeton, New Jersey.
The NSTX-U Recovery Project is working to complete a major upgrade of PPPL's National Spherical
Torus eXperiment (NSTX) fusion device located in Princeton, New Jersey. The upgrade, when
completed, will allow for a broader range of fusion science experiments, with the goal to ultimately achieve fusion as noted above. The Project includes a portfolio of mechanical alterations and improvements to the NSTX-U tokamak vacuum vessel internals, and mechanical systems and equipment needed to meet PPPL's research objectives. For assigned jobs within this portfolio, NSTX-U Mechanical Design Engineer will serve the Core Duties defined herein.

CORE DUTIES
  • Contribute to Mechanical Design and analysis of components with moderate supervision.
  • Carry out the process of designing, documenting, and reviewing engineering design and calculations.
  • Assist in preparation of cost and schedule estimates.
  • Prepare documentation (installation procedures, analysis reports, calculations, system description documents, design reviews).
  • Supervise the process of the drawings by overseeing the preparation, approval, and release of drawings for manufacturing.
  • Oversee and/or supervise the fabrication, installation, and commissioning of designed components.
  • Write specifications and statements of work to establish external standards for suppliers and vendors.
