Mechanical Design Engineer II - Space Systems (Onsite)
Collins Aerospace Systems is one of the world’s largest suppliers of technologically advanced aerospace and defense products. Our Space Systems business unit within Collins provides life support and thermal management systems including comprehensive integrated Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS) solutions for NASA, government, and commercial customers. Our solutions enable International Space Station (ISS) missions, satellite and orbital destination platforms, and human mobility missions including current and next generation space suit programs. Our products and integrated mission systems offerings enable Low Earth Orbit (LEO), lunar, exploratory, and deep space platforms across a wide range of programs including NASA’s Artemis Program which will establish a sustainable presence on the Moon to prepare for missions to Mars.
Collins is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to work within the Space Systems Design and Development Department and be a collaborative member with the other disciplines of the Integrated Product Team (IPT) including project, structures, thermal, and electrical design. Tasks will vary, but may include clean sheet design, delivering development hardware, facilitating the delivery of production hardware, processing engineering changes to the production configuration, and support of fielded components and systems.
The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience in deliver against the cost, schedule and technical requirements The candidate will have experience creating definition for Peer and Design reviews, analyses, Validation and Verification activities, design documentation (drawings, reports)
Primary Responsibilities:
- Resolution of mechanical engineering problems of difficult and complex scope, seeking a balanced system solution, ensuring engineering excellence, all with minimal supervisor oversight
- Develop design definition from concept to final product for components (Fans, Hydrodynamic Pumps, Heat Exchangers, Accumulator Tanks and Valves) and subsystems of integrated Environmental Control and Life Support Systems (ECLSS) that conforms to Collins technical standards and customer specifications.
- Provide Model Based Definition using Creo 8 and Windchill 11 in the design of fabricated parts and mechanical assemblies including sheet metal, weldments, machined parts, mechanical chassis, and rack-mounted structures.
- Perform preliminary or sizing structural analysis in support of design definition generation.
- Generate CAD model inputs for the structural analysis discipline.
- Perform stress and load combinations to determine analytical verification of compliance to customer factor of safety requirements and document .
- Process technically sound engineering changes within schedule that meet performance metrics.
- Utilize standard work and CORE/ACE tools to continuously improve the design process.
- Mentor other mechanical engineers in process-related and/or technical subjects
- Communicate clearly and concisely to all levels of the organization.
- Collaboration, innovation and taking the initiative and leading by example.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree (typically in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM)) and a minimum of 2 years of prior relevant experience unless prohibited by local laws/regulations OR In absence of a degree, 6 years of relevant experience is required
- Must be a U.S. Citizen
Preferred Qualifications:
- BS in Mechanical, Aeronautical Engineering w/ 2-5 years of professional experience
- MS in Mechanical, Aeronautical Engineer or MBA degree (desired)
- Experience in the design, development, and qualification of space-qualified ECLSS, thermal management, or similarly complex electro-mechanical systems
- Exceptional organizational, analytical, written, and verbal communication skills
- Ability to multi-task with a focus on daily issues and longer-term strategies
- Solid interpersonal skills with experience in employee management, coaching, and mentoring
- Strong computer skills to include extensive use of Microsoft Office
- Experience with Product Line Management (PLM) solutions (e.g., Windchill) Creo 8 or greater
- Demonstrated experience in problem solving
