Job description

At Meta’s Reality Labs Research, our goal is to make world-class consumer virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences. Come work alongside industry-leading scientists and engineers to create the technology that makes VR and AR pervasive and universal. Join the adventure of a lifetime as we make science fiction real and change the world. As a Materials Scientist at Meta, you will play a critical role in developing AR/VR systems. You will focus on developing advanced materials and devices for near-eye displays, and will become part of a team exploring novel concepts through design, modeling, and fast-iterative prototyping. We are seeking someone who works well in a highly collaborative, cross-functional environment, who communicates complex concepts clearly and succinctly, who demonstrates scientific rigor, who is unafraid to tackle new challenges, and who works well in high- ambiguity discovery phases. If you are passionate about using your generalist-head to push the boundaries of what is possible, we want you on our team.

Materials Scientist: Semi-Crystalline Polymers Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate feasibility of bench-top equipment and formulation for novel polymer film, fiber, and composite processes.
  • Develop polymer film and fiber pilot-scale processes with a cross-functional team.
  • Identify film and fiber applications in the AR/VR and haptics systems, and be able to prototype the applications.
  • Drive XFN teams collaborations to achieve success from R&D to product.
  • Lead vendor engagement.
  • Independently drive deliverables.
  • Collaborate in a team environment across a diverse set of disciplines including Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, and Optics.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. degree or equivalent experience in Polymer Physics, Polymer Material, Polymer Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
  • 5+ years work experience in Materials Science or a related field.
  • Experience with thermoplastic polymer film and fiber laboratory work and scale-up.
  • Experience with optical films and films lamination.
  • Experience with polymer characterization and failure analysis.
  • Experience with internal and external cross-functional team work and vendor engagement.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proven track record of delivering research to product.
  • Experience with fiber composite molding.
  • Experience of gel-casting.
