Responsibilities:
The Nuclear Chemistry and Engineering (NCE) Group is seeking an outstanding Materials Scientist to support research on the characterization, synthesis, and production of advanced manufactured materials used in nuclear processes. This includes the Hanford Site cleanup, river corridor protection, nuclear materials stewardship, non-proliferation missions, the nuclear fuel life cycle, national security missions, energy production, nuclear fuel cycle, tritium production, nuclear fuel fabrication, advanced material systems and irradiated materials characterization.

Will also perform the following duties:
  • Lead an R&D team to designs, builds, and operates advanced manufacturing experimental systems.
  • Design and specify requirements to produce advanced manufacturing test specimens.
  • Lead the specimen analysis/data collection, data reduction, and reporting.
  • Lead efforts to develop new procedures and methods for advanced manufacturing of fuel and reactor materials, including post-irradiation examination of these specimens.
  • Design, set up, test, and operate materials science and advanced manufacturing test equipment/instruments.
  • Lead technical tasks and subtasks, reporting of experimental results via scientific publications and conference proceedings.
  • Work with radioactive, non-radioactive and hazardous materials on the benchtop, in fume hoods and glove boxes. Including mentorship of junior staff in these areas.
  • Development of sustainable advanced manufacturing processes that may include innovative recycling or waste minimization process development
As a PNNL Materials Scientist, the candidate will span fundamental materials science to applied materials engineering. Synthesize and study the structures and physical/chemical properties of various natural, synthetic, and composite materials. Study the structures of materials from atomic to large length scales and perform short‐ and long‐term characterization, modeling, or testing of these materials to understand their behavior and determine ways to improve them or develop new materials with specific properties. Develop individual steps and combined processes for manufacturing, joining, finishing, treating, and strengthening materials. Develop computational models of materials that describe structures, properties, and performance of materials.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
  • BS/BA and 7+ years of relevant work experience -OR-
  • MS/MA and 5+ years of relevant work experience -OR-
  • PhD with 3+ year of relevant experience

  • The candidate must have experience with hands-on experience on a variety of advanced manufacturing techniques (Additive Manufacturing experience will be an advantage).
  • The candidate should have experience with any of the following:
    • XRD, SEM, EBSD, TEM, FIB, Nano hardness measurements, APT
    • Fabrication of refractory metal alloys used for nuclear cladding and metallic fuel
    • Casting, cold working, cutting/machining/shearing, polishing, welding/brazing processes
    • Conducting and evaluating data from mechanical properties testing of irradiated materials including tensile, burst, and hardness.
  • The ideal candidate will have experience with thermocalc.
  • An established record of proposing and executing competitive research projects.
  • The preferred candidate will have experience working in a combination of experimental or modeling materials development tasks.
  • Experience in innovative recycling or waste minimization process development will be an advantage.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, a demonstrated ability to work individually and as a team member.
