JOB SUMMARY:

This position plays a crucial role in supporting the materials department by ensuring that all team members are adequately trained to the highest standards to drive efficiency and reduce errors in handling materials. This training includes safety protocols, equipment operation, and best practices for handling various types of materials across the facility. 


ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Practice and maintain safe work habits and conditions (using trailer jack, wheel chocks, personal protective equipment per company requirements, etc.)  Follows daily hi-lo safety checklist.
  • Passes MIOSHA test and follows all Magna and Federal rules and procedures for glass handling, material handling, and other safety procedures.
  • Operates forklifts and other material handling equipment, promptly reporting any equipment malfunctions. Recharges batteries as needed. Must have mechanical aptitude to maintain equipment in good working order and report malfunctions to the supervisor.
  • Oversees the certification process for hilo, turret, and tugger roles. Ensures certifications are kept up-to-date and ensures Material Handlers possess necessary skills and knowledge to perform their duties effectively.
  • Collaborating closely with the Supervisor and Team Lead, ensure training schedules are aligned with business needs and production goals, while also maintaining up-to-date training and skills matrices. Additionally, establish schedules for cross-training and job rotation in coordination with the Supervisor and Team Lead.
  • Verifies that training materials are relevant and up to date, keeping informed on latest industry practices, equipment updates, and safety regulations.
  • Attend start of shift meetings to report on key training-related schedules and metrics to ensure the team is aligned and informed for the day.
  • Provide backup material handling/shipping duties as required by production and staffing levels.
  • Follows and implements duties including those specified under the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) and the Michigan Occupational Safety & Health Administration (MiOSHA).
  • Seeks out and corrects unsafe acts and hazardous conditions, ensuring all safety and non-safety plant rules and regulations are followed.
  • Responds immediately to items brought to his/her attention with respect to hazards, defects, incidents or non-compliance issues.
  • Attends Environmental, Health and Safety training.
  • Collaborates with the operations team to bolster the manufacturing, shipping, and receiving departments, with a focus on collective team success rather than individual performance. This entails being mindful of each team member’s limitations and providing mutual assistance to ensure efficient material movement.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 3 years’ experience in Materials Training or Materials Lead role.
  • Strong knowledge of ERP systems and third-party customer shipping software.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, QAD, and customer portals.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with effective written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Detail driven with a strong attention to maintaining accurate records.
  • Must be able to complete approved lift truck training program and pass the retesting requirements every 3 years. 
  • Must have a demonstrated history of planning and following work schedules and procedures, working independently without direct supervision, and showcasing initiative and strong organizational skills.
  • General math knowledge including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

PHYSICALDEMANDS:

  • Prolonged standing 8-12 hours per day.
  • Ability to lift 50+ pounds with assistance.
  • Repetitive bending, twisting, turning, lifting.
  • Repetitive use of hands, including gripping, grasping, pinching, squeezing.
  • Exposure to fluorescent lighting and sometimes loud noises depending on the work area.
