Job description

The Safety Supervisor is responsible for leading and driving all facets of safety in the designated market area. This role is responsible for compliance with the IWS’s Health and Safety/ Transportation Compliance Programs and aligning company standards with all applicable legislation.  IWS’s goal is to ensure that all programs introduced to staff members and management are communicated properly and understood to provide a safe workplace. This position is responsible for reinforcing the safety and compliance of front-line staff members who service in the designated market area.  This role will report directly to the Market Area leadership.  They will also have a dotted line responsibility to the Corporate Vice President of Safety, ensuring Safety policies and standards, programs, and tools are deployed in the market.


  • Demonstrates a commitment to communicating, improving, and adhering to safety policies in all work environment areas. Promotes a positive safety culture through leadership by example.
  • Conduct safety observations and assessments to ensure that all safety practices, programs, record keeping, and other related activities are being followed and performed to company, customer, and regulatory standards. If not, assist the worker to properly understand and execute before allowing the job to continue.
  • Ensure the job is being performed in a safe and compliant manner by performing site safety audits/ observations, and following up on potential issues to confirm corrective actions have been implemented.
  • Conduct/ Participate in market level safety stand-downs/ meetings as needed.
  • Ensure workers have access to and are using proper PPE for identified hazards. Carry a supply of routine PPE and other necessary items in case needed during field observations.
  • Investigate incidents and accidents and prepare written reports.
  • Assist in managed care of injuries.
  • Participate and possible lead Incident Review Team meetings. Additionally, help determine root cause and make recommendations for corrective actions.
  • Provide training on safety programs, transportation compliance and SOPs as needed.
  • Monitor training records and/or manage them consistent with existing procedures in conjunction with the corporate training group. Ensure that divisions are keeping employees current.
  • Ensure all information, signs, posters, and other materials that warn of potential and actual safety hazards are legible and clearly implemented.

 


 

  • 1-2 years of Health & Safety/ Transportation Compliance experience
  • Experience from the sanitation/ solid waste industry is strongly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of federal, state, and local government Health & Safety/ Transportation regulations (including but not limited to: DOT, OSHA, NYC BIC, DSNY, NYDEC/ NJDEP, etc.)
  • Good analytical and organizational skills with the ability to adapt to a fast-paced work environment.
  • Excellent ability to communicate, collaborate, and partner with Operations to ensure safe operations across our sites.
  • Lead or participate in special projects as assigned.
  • Solid computer skills, including MS Office required to efficiently complete audits, reports, access safety applications, etc.

  1. Route Observations/ Coaching
    • Help Route Supervisors be better. Ensure that good observations are being done.  Go out with Route Supervisors to observe what they do and if they do it correctly (2 per month)
    • Conduct ride-alongs with drivers to evaluate their knowledge, skill and safety compliance (2 per month)
    • Review Samsara/Lytx for harsh events/ compliance issues. Help coach employees to understand the alerts.  Work with Route Supervisors to also understand how to coach and what to look for.  Ensure information is properly being captured in the system

 

  1. Participate in Leading Indicator Inspections
    • Fire drills- Quarterly
    • Facility Inspections- Team inspections, done quarterly
    • Safety Lanes- Monthly
    • Other facility related KPIs to help educate and document findings

 

  1. Accident Investigations
    • Help with accident investigations as needed. Ensure that Route supervisors understand proper accident investigations, picture taking and information collection

 

  1. Training
    • As training programs are developed, assist with implementation of those programs
    • Conduct necessary training

 

  1. Knowledge Building
    • Learn the safety regulations- understand the regulation or company policy that supports the questions on the inspection/ observation forms. You only can fix the hazard you can identify.
