Marine Technicians oversee deck operations on the US Antarctic Program's two research vessels: the Nathaniel B. Palmer and the Laurence M. Gould.  In their role, they are responsible for the rigging and mechanical operation of all scientific equipment deployed over the side of the vessel, including all small boat operations.  They are also responsible for orchestrating all cargo movements to and from the vessel.

Deployment to Antarctica is required of this position annually. Eligibility for deployment will require physical and dental evaluations with parameters determined by the National Science Foundation (NSF).

Must obtain a Public Trust security clearance prior to start date, this process could take up to 4 months.

About the Antarctic Support Contract:

Leidos Antarctic Support Contract (ASC) is the prime contractor to the National Science Foundation (NSF) in support of the United States Antarctic Program (USAP). Leidos supports the NSF’s Office of Polar Program’s Antarctic Infrastructure and Logistics by aligning with their Mission and Vision Statements:

  • Vision Expanding our scientific reach in Antarctica through increased operational and logistical effectiveness.

  • Mission:  To provide the operational and logistical platform necessary for the U.S. to conduct world-class science in Antarctica and maintain its active and influential presence on the continent.

Leidos ASC provides science and logistics support for approximately 150 science and technical events across three geographically remote research stations; McMurdo Station, Palmer Station, and South Pole Station and several deep field sites across Antarctica. Each station or field site supports world class research across multiple science disciplines.  The planning and implementation of science support requirements in Antarctica is a critical part of our mission.

The Challenge:

  • Maintains safe workplace program and ensures safety is the highest priority in the workplace.  Maintains safety of all Marine Technician (MT) operations both on and off the ship. Must be proactive in suggesting improvements to safety policies where applicable.

  • Uses established procedures and protocols, works closely with a team of other Antarctic Support Contract (ASC) technicians on the United States Antarctic Program (USAP) research vessels to conduct science support operations.

  • Coordinates with the Marine Technical Services Manager or Marine Tech Senior to identify tasking and watch schedules to support the scientific research and ensure that ongoing projects are completed.

  • Maintains and coordinates deck operations, deck safety and science operations on the USAP research vessels. This may include carpentry, fabrication, welding, hydraulics, pneumatics, rigging, basic electrical/electronics, preventive maintenance, and similar related tasking.

  • Is able to assess risks and implement mitigation strategies in an ever changing environment.  

  • Prepares and maintains documentation for vessel-based operations. This includes turnover reports at the end of each cruise, use logs for all equipment, operations logs, and detailed inventories for all equipment and supplies moving on and off the vessel.  

  • Oversees and assists scientists in deployment, retrieval, and handling of specialized oceanographic equipment. Provides technical assistance in the operation and repair or modification of the equipment.

  • Assists the safe on-load and off-load of scientific cargo during vessel port calls. Ensures that scientific cargo is safely stowed and secured for sea.

  • Coordinates the maintenance, repair, storage, and inventory of the vessel’s scientific and oceanographic deck equipment and machinery.

  • Maintains the vessel’s inflatable boats and outboard motors in good working order, including maintaining the proper spare parts needed to fully support the scientific program.

  • Safely operates the inflatable boats to transport the scientific party and/or ASC staff in sea and weather conditions that are often less than ideal.

  • Assists with on-going science projects as directed by the Marine Technical Services Manager. This may include temporary duty (TDY) at Denver Project Office to ensure that adequate stocks of MT-related consumables are available on the vessels.

  • Prepares and maintains documentation for vessel-based operations. This includes turnover reports at the end of each cruise.

  • This position requires heavy lifting and strenuous physical activity both indoors and outdoors.

  • Interacts with the National Science Foundation (NSF), military and other agency officials, both over the telephone and in person.

  • Performs other duties as required.

What Sets You Apart:

  • A minimum two years’ experience on research vessels assisting with scientific programs in an on-deck capacity, or other applicable career experience

  • Expected Skills and Competencies:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of at-sea oceanographic work

  • Demonstrated ability to perform on-deck rigging, cargo handling and crane operations

  • Proficient with basic hydraulic plumbing including spool valve/hose installation and termination.

  • Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies, and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum as required by the position.

  • Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors in extreme cold as required by the position.

  • Valid Driver’s License issued in the United States

  • Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods

You May Also Have:

  • College level coursework in Marine or a science-related field

  • USCG license or document as Able-bodied Seaman

  • Emergency Medical Technician, offshore or field medic training

  • Experience in commercial marine operations such as merchant marine, fisheries, etc.

  • High-latitude or polar experience is a plus.

  • An individual with academic research vessel experience

  • Experience with deploying/retrieving oceanographic and scientific equipment

Pay Range:

Pay Range $53,950.00 - $97,525.00
