Flexible/remote location - AMER (East Coast) or EMEA (Amsterdam, London, Barcelona)

 

About the Sustainable Apparel Coalition

The Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC) is an industry-wide group of more than 250 leading apparel, footwear and textile, brands, retailers, suppliers, service providers, trade associations, nonprofits, NGOs and academic institutions working to reduce environmental impact and promote social justice throughout the global value chain. Leveraging the Higg Index suite of tools for the standardized measurement of value chain sustainability, the SAC is working to transform business for exponential impact.

The Opportunity

The Manager, Research, Grants and Funding is an important role for the organization. Radical change can only happen if all actors, private and public, work together to make the consumer goods industry truly sustainable. A unique and exciting opportunity, this role combines the development and implementation of a robust research agenda, engagement with the academic community and other key stakeholders, while also crucially leading development and implementation of a grant and Funding strategy to support SAC’s vision and mission, and key strategic priorities, delivering positive impact in the pillars of Combat Climate Change, Decent work for all, and a Nature-Positive Future.

 

Key Responsibilities

  •  Research Management
    • Co-develop and implement with the Director, Partnerships & Stakeholder Engagement and other senior staff, a comprehensive research agenda, and academic engagement strategy, considering as applicable 
      • Lead and oversee partnership engagement with academia for the SAC in support of the SAC research agenda as well as  tool and programme development
      • Monitor and synthesize relevant research contributing to the SAC strategic plan and SAC research agenda
      • Develop a visiting scholar programme concept , -plan and -infrastructure
      • Investigate, develop and coordinate as appropriate, and in partnership with our technology partner Worldly, the development of a framework enabling access to relevant SAC assets, potentially including, access to Higg Index Tools, secure anonymised data sets for academic research partners 
      • Manage and facilitate relevant academic engagement working groups as needed to define and develop relevant strategies, implementation plans, and policy positions, in close collaboration with the Public Affairs team
      • Analyze and highlight opportunities for the SAC research agenda to contribute to relevant policy developments and influence relevant policy bodies, in close collaboration with the Public Affairs team
      • Develop, in close collaboration with the Marketing and Communications team, a research, -communication- and publication schedule to feature the SAC’s research-related results
    • Increase internal awareness and understanding on SAC’s research-related activities as well as relevant external research 
    • Act as a key SAC contact for the academic community and research partners
  • Grant & Funding Management
    • Co-develop and implement with the Director, Partnerships & Stakeholder Engagement and other senior staff, a grant and Funding strategy to support delivery of the SAC Vision and Mission, including:
      • Conduct quickscan identifying grant and other funding opportunities applicable to the wider SAC community
      • Identifying and managing grant proposals
      • Build, maintain and report back on pipeline of international relevant, high-impact grant opportunities
      • Lead proposal writing phase during concept note and proposal application for Grants and/or other funding
    • Manage a successfully attracted grant/or funding project as Grant/Funding Manager as relationship manager in close collaboration with SAC technical work stream leads and/or contributors - if applicable
    • Lead, monitor, analyze, report on progress and provide overall support

Qualifications and Experience

  • 4-6 years of research experience on sustainability matters in global supply chains, ideally including the (co-)development of multidisciplinary studies
  • At least a master's degree, in sustainability related studies, international relations, or related area
  • Knowledge of sustainability issues in the garment, textile or footwear sector and adjacent industries and, ability to facilitate this knowledge into well-articulated arguments
  • Experience in managing  academic engagement processes to shape research (including funding)
  • Network in and knowledge of the academic landscape on sustainability in global supply chains
  • Demonstrated organizational, (grant) administrative, (grant) project management, and time management skills; results driven with the ability to carry out multiple responsibilities with minimal supervision
  • Network in and knowledge of the grant and Funding landscape to support sustainability impact programs in global supply chains
  • Good communication skills built on tact, diplomacy, and awareness of cultural differences 
  • Excellent English writing skills and ability to translate academic language into concise messages for different target groups
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with other parts of the SAC team, treat others with respect and care, and work as part of a global, multicultural organization
  • Enjoys a fast pace, dynamic, challenging and team-oriented work environment;
  • Good presentation skills, and relationship management / listening skills;

Reporting Structure and Timeline

This is a full-time role, reporting directly to the Director, Partnerships & Stakeholder Engagement with a start date of 1 February 2024 

Compensation, and Location

The Sustainable Apparel Coalition offers competitive salary commensurate with experience. Salary bands are based on the country of location. The SAC’s members and partners are global organizations, and as such, the SAC staff sometimes work early or late hours. This position is a full-time flexible/remote position, based either  in the AMER region (East Coast),or in the EMEA region in close proximity to one of the SAC EMEA hubs of Amsterdam, London, or Barcelona. If hired in the AMER region - the starting salary band is $75,000 - $78,000.
