Job Description
The Manager of Medical & Nursing Services, RN is a key associate at Hope Network whose primary responsibilities include the following: Leadership, management and coordination between all HNNR medical services (Nursing, PM&R, Primary Care, Psychiatry). The role also provides rehabilitation nursing clinical knowledge, expertise and mentoring to ensure the provision of high quality care to patients with complex neurologic and medical diagnoses. The Manager of Medical & Nursing Services will lead the Nursing Department in the development of uniform medical competence and care practices throughout the affiliate and serve as a resource for the program nurses and other clinical professionals. This role will contribute to the HNNR strategic growth initiatives through participation in program development, modifications and process improvement, and through communication with clinical colleagues at the affiliate level.

- Regular and predictable attendance is an essential requirement of this position.
- Management: Supervise all Nursing Services including supervision of all RNs and LPNs working in the program. Manage staffing as program needs dictate. Oversee the quality and the competencies of the nursing staff. Ensure optimal services are delivered
- Lead assigned staff in efficient and high quality delivery of care. Programmatic support of all clinical services including navigating the electronic medical record, quality documentation, staff development, professional work behaviors, performance evaluation, and policy/procedure compliance.
- Program Development:
- Assist HNNR Leadership in implementing initiatives to improve the quality of the rehabilitation program, extend the medical skill set of the program, and expand the identified market. Identify and implement new medical technologies or skill sets that further the affiliate’s ability to accept medically complex admissions. Monitor program initiatives for on-going compliance with licensing and accreditation requirements.
- Serve as an extension of the Medical Director for program development and improvement initiatives.
- Training:
- Direct oversight of the nursing practice and delegation of nursing responsibilities based on scope of practice. This includes providing clinical expertise and clinical competency assessment.
- Work with Admissions and the Nursing Department to determine the training needs and in partnership with the Nurse Educator develop and implement training to staff involved in patient care.
- Research best practices to share and implement throughout our programs.
- Assess program staff nursing skill competencies on a routine basis.
- Head Rehabilitation Nurse:
- Serve as a mentor in the philosophy of Rehabilitation Nursing. Work with nursing staff to increase knowledge and competency in this area of expertise.
- When needed, assist the HNNR internal case managers with medical case management issues that require medical knowledge beyond their expertise. Assist in the coordination of care between medical providers, and assure that patient needs are met and expectations are exceeded for this area.
- Fulfill duties in the role of Rehabilitation Nurse, RN. Assist with patient oversight and the direction of Rehab Techs during times of high nursing needs.
- On-call support as needs arise. Able to come into the program when a crisis or emergent need arises related to medical service provision.
- Clinical Advisor
- Serve as a clinical expert to review and provide input on medical appropriateness of admissions and to increase ability to serve patients with complex treatment needs. As warranted, identifies and leads efforts to ensure adequate training and skill competency for nursing, clinical and residential teams.
- Make recommendation for or against admission when expertise is solicited by the leadership team.
- Medical & Nursing Procedures and Policies
- Work to develop and streamline processes across the affiliate with focus on Medical, Nursing, and Residential Services and interface with the EMR, MAR and other electronic recording and databases.
- Work collaboratively with Regional Operations Director to identify and implement nursing/medical staff processes and documentation systems that can be identified in HNNR Policies, Procedures, CARF Standards and Michigan Adult Foster Care licensing rules.
- Ensure consistency in documentation practices in the medical record including, but not limited to, nursing assessments, patient and family education, daily notes, procedures, and billing notes if applicable.
- Other duties as assigned.
Educational / Talent Requirements:
- Minimum Education required: Bachelor of Science Nursing (BSN). Certification as a Rehabilitation Nurse (CRRN) preferred.
- Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record as it relates to Hope Network policy.
- Ability to foster and build excellent relationships with various teams across the organization in order to achieve the program goals. This includes, but is not limited to, the Sales/Marketing Team, Admissions Team, Nursing/Clinical Team, and Residential Team.
- Must be able to develop an excellent relationship with the Medical Director and be a trusted partner in extending their leadership to the program.
- Ability to quickly and confidently assess the medical acuity of a referred patient and determine the rehabilitation potential of a patient through a records review and collaboration with program leaders. Ability to competently discuss and answer questions of the Medical Director for any referrals that have complex medical concerns that require decision-making and, if admitted, on-going monitoring by the Medical Director.
- Excellent communication skills with physicians, discharge planners, families, and funders. Ability to discuss technical issues with physicians and admission process requirements with funders and discharge planners. Ability to listen to families’ needs and provide education to the family.
- Excellent writing skills and understanding of Medical language is required.
- Talent/Skill set required: Excellent training skills, in both formal and hands-on training venues. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to make team members feel confident in their ability to care for patients.
- Talent/Skill set preferred: Extensive knowledge of the treatment team process in medical rehabilitation. Ability to set rehab goals and objectives appropriate for levels of care provided.
Work Experience Requirements:
- At least 5 years of experience in nursing positions. At least two of those years in an acute, subacute or post-acute hospital setting, with staff supervision experience preferred.
- In-depth experience with medically complicated neurologic diagnoses including spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, stroke, and other acquired brain injury diagnoses.
- Previous work experience required: Experience on a multi-disciplinary rehabilitation treatment team for brain injury, spinal cord injury, or neurological disorders.
- Previous work experience required: Leadership experience within a team environment.
- Previous work experience required: Experience working directly with physician leadership on patient care initiatives.
