Job Description
The Manager Media Relations works to promote and protect the image, reputation and brand of ASU's Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts in Los Angeles by creating and distributing a wide range of content, including media releases, across multiple formats and platforms and facilitating brand partnerships to tell the story of the Herberger Institute's people and projects and how they advance the charter of ASU.

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Journalism or related field AND six (6) years of related experience, which includes four (4) years experience in Media Relations; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved.

Flexible work options

Desired Qualifications
  • Experience in the arts/design or entertainment industry and/or an institution of higher learning is desirable.
  • Public speaking experience.
  • Bilingual: English/Spanish.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of general news writing, editing and distribution of news and feature releases.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of local, regional and national media sources and contacts.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of higher education issues and news stories concerning higher education trends.
  • Experience in public relations and brand partnership and influencer acquisition andmanagement.
  • Experience in translating materials from specific disciplines for release to media for public consumption.
  • Evidence of effective communication.
  • Experience in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.

Essential Duties
  • Reporting to the Director of Marketing, the Media Relations Manager will interact with news media and brand partners in collaboration with the Herberger Institute's faculty, administration, staff, students, and alumni to promote the Institute and its work; particular emphasis will be placed on key strategic priorities identified by Herberger Institute and the Institute's leadership, and on amplifying the Institute's position as a world-renowned design and arts institution.
  • Advises on targeting stories in support of strategic initiatives to appropriate media.
  • Develops new and maintains current relationships for ASU and the Herberger Institute with media organizations such as print, local television and radio stations and television networks as well as strategic brand partnerships and influencers that align with the goals of Herberger Institute. Arranges interviews for senior administrators and faculty and assists them in maintaining a positive relationship with local, regional, and national media.
  • Writes, reviews, and advises on design of stories and other features with media potential and pitches those stories to appropriate national and local media. Helps to produce, script, review, and shape news reports and documentaries that have national television potential and works to have these reports and documentaries aired by national networks.
  • Prepares and submits reports regarding area operation, including an annual Media Relations plan.
  • Develops and maintains contacts with campus staff, faculty and administrators. Assists reporters and editors in their efforts to understand the mission and activities of the Herberger Institute and the university. Maintains the news section of the ASU FIDM website.
  • Manages the identification and implementation of strategic and beneficial brand partnerships, working with Herberger Institute leadership in LA and Tempe, AZ. Fosters and maintains relationships with industry partners in the fashion, entertainment, and design, as well as the general Los Angeles community. Serves as project manager to execute the partnerships and work with cross-functional teams to enhance the campaign beyond publicity, to include content for social media and general marketing initiatives.
  • Researches, develops, and pitches partnership opportunities. Negotiates partnership agreements.
  • Creates and implements unique budgets per collaboration.
  • Reports progress and final results to leadership.

In addition to general Media Relations management and strategy, the Media Relations Manager will work closely with the Herberger Institute Media and Communications team to:
  • Serve as a front-line point-of-contact for general media inquiries regarding Herberger Institute in Los Angeles. To facilitate these communications, the Media
  • Relations Manager is expected to develop contacts and maintain positive relationships with key representatives of the media.
  • Act as coordinator and on-site supervisor for photography, videography, and media and documentary filming on campus.
  • This will include scheduling crews, coordinating with building and campus administrators, assigning on-site supervision, managing contract negotiations, etc.
  • Develop and maintain, with the assistance of others in Herberger Institute, media distribution lists;
  • Manage media tracking and monitoring, including assisting with the preparation and dissemination of regular media monitoring reports.
  • The Media Relations Manager is expected to maintain a keen awareness of the higher education landscape and art and design events with potential connections with or impact to the Herberger Institute. The individual will work closely with colleagues in the Institute to ensure that content is strategic, engaging, and coordinated across platform/channel and appropriate for the Institute's target audiences.
