Summary
This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.
About the Position: The purpose of this position is to perform work encompassing a variety of trades, such as carpentry, painting, electrical maintenance, and general equipment maintenance in support of daily operations at the Cape Cod Canal in Buzzards Bay, MA.

Duties
  • As a Maintenance Worker, you will:
  • Perform routine heating and air-conditioning system maintenance (e.g., inspection and replacement of filters, coils and elements).
  • Perform various carpentry tasks that involve following blueprints and building plans; measuring, cutting, shaping wood and other materials; new construction and maintenance of existing flooring, siding, decking, door and window frames.
  • Conduct general electrical maintenance, such as inspecting and replacing interior and exterior light fixtures, fuses, connectors and switches; securing exposed wiring.
  • Perform routine grounds care maintenance, such as mowing and watering lawn areas, trimming hedges and shrubs, and mulching landscape beds.
  • Use a variety of power tools to complete tasks related to grounds care and facilities maintenance, repairs, minor construction and/or renovation projects.
  • Operate and maintain a variety of outdoor power equipment (e.g., leaf bowers, push-lawn mowers, riding mowers, hedge trimmers, snow blowers, and salt spreaders).
  • Consistently adhere to health and safety laws, rules and regulations to maintain a safe and hygienic work environment.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation..
  • Mandatory Drug Testing Designated Position: The incumbent will be subject to periodic and random urinalysis drug testing as required by AR 600-85.
  • Must possess or obtain and maintain a valid state-issued driver's license for entire duration of appointment.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50-70 pounds without assistance.
  • May be required to occasionally work in inclement weather conditions to include cold temperatures, snow, humidity, rain and wind.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brakes endorsement after 6 months of employment.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a 2A and 4G Massachusetts Hoisting License after 6 months of employment.

Qualifications

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.
Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) MAINTENANCE WORKER ~ without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common Maintenance Worker duties, such as: carpentry, painting, electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning, operate powered tools, facilities and ground maintenanceFailure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
PHYSICAL EFFORT: The MAINTENANCE WORKER makes installations and repairs from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, and in typically hard-to-reach spaces. The incumbent must be able to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in tiring or uncomfortable positions, as well as walk over uneven terrain. Duties require the ability to carry and set up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50-70 pounds. The incumbent is required to move objects weighing 70-150 pounds and greater with the proper moving equipment. Must be able to climb inclines up to 10 feet in height and ladders up to 24 feet in height. Must be able to stand or remain on feet for up to two-hour durations at a time. Must have normal finger dexterity. May be required to work in streams, creeks, and rivers.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Work performed indoors may involve occasional exposure to dust, dirt, grease, oils, and noisy surroundings. Work performed outdoors may require occasional exposure to inclement weather conditions (cold temperatures, snow, humidity, rain, wind). Work duties may require occasional exposure to elevated work surfaces, crawlspaces, insects, rodents, and sewage.
Education
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
