Summary of Position
The City has an immediate opening for a temporary Maintenance Worker in our Public Works department to drive truck (CDL required) to perform fall street sweeping, leaf hauling, and other duties as assigned.
Availability: October - November 30, 2023
Schedule: Generally Monday-Friday, 7:00AM - 3:30PM; up to 40 hours per week.
Driver's License requirement: Class B CDL (or higher) with airbrake endorsement is required.
ELIGIBLITY FOR HIRE: Eligibility for hire will require the successful completion/passage of all pre-employment screening requirements which will include: a driving record and criminal history background check, DOT drug screen, and reference check.

General summary of position: This position provides a wide variety of manual and skilled duties involving the maintenance and repair of various public works facilities. Performs various types of manual labor. Operates light equipment and trucks in the maintenance of streets, parks, airport and provides maintenance to the City storm sewer system.
Essential Functions
1. Perform manual to semi-skilled duties in the maintenance and repair of municipal streets, parks, athletic fields, storm sewers, airport, and other public work facilities to assure the general public's safety.
2. Operate a variety of equipment associated with public works maintenance and repair such as: pickups, dump trucks, mowers, tractors, bucket truck, water truck, skid loaders, soil compactor, forklift, tack wagon, roller, plow, sander blower, vactor, paint gun, chipper, welder and torch, and other related equipment.
3. Perform snow plowing, street sanding, and street painting.
4. Perform asphalt repair, concrete repair, mowing, tree trimming, landscaping, and other related duties.
5. Perform electrical, plumbing, painting, carpentry, and other general maintenance duties on public buildings and facilities.
6. Perform daily maintenance and inspections on vehicles and equipment as required.
7. Safely operate a variety of hand tools and equipment.
8. Attendance is an essential function of this position.
9. Perform related work as required.

Qualifications and Competencies
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  1. High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
  2. Valid MN Class B CDL License and airbrake endorsement.
  3. One (1) year experience in an area of construction such as carpentry, welding, landscape, masonry or asphalt paving.
  4. One (1) year experience in operation of trucks and light equipment.

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of streets, parks, and utility maintenance practices.
  • Knowledge of building repair, plumbing, carpentry, heating, and roofing.
  • Knowledge and skill in the care and use of hand and power tools.
  • Knowledge and skill in basic preventative maintenance and making repairs on equipment used in this position.
  • Ability to understand and perform street maintenance activities, including patching, black topping, manhole maintenance, storm sewer operation, snow plowing, sanding, street sweeping, general summer and winter maintenance, and street inventory.
  • Ability to understand and perform parks maintenance activities, including turf renovation, irrigation, mowing, field/court maintenance, shelter building maintenance, watering, tree and shrub maintenance, play equipment area maintenance, and general summer/winter park maintenance.
  • Ability to understand and perform water and sewer maintenance activities including sanitary and storm sewers, and catch basin systems.
  • Ability to operate in an efficient and safe manner all equipment and vehicles required for this position.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with all City personnel, outside agencies, and the public.

General supervision by the Public Ways Superintendent.
PUBLIC CONTACTS
Frequent contact with employees, department heads and occasional contact with Highway Departments, other municipal personnel, school officials and the general public.

Performing the duties of this job require the use of equipment including but not limited to: pick up, dump truck, mowers, tractors, bucket trucks, water truck, skid loader, soil compactor, forklift, tack wagon, roller, plow, sander, blower, vactor, paint gun, chipper, welder and torch.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk on uneven and rough terrain, paved and unpaved trails and sidewalks, as well as within the public rights of way. The employee is exposed to a wide range of outdoor weather conditions, occasionally working in extreme heat or cold weather.
The employees in this position must be able to work a flexible work schedule to include nights, weekends, and holidays.
