JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

As an incoming team member of the Office of Physical Plant, it will be expected that all employees embody and model Penn State's and Finance and Business's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Perform gross removal of asbestos, PCB's, lead, and mold, from buildings, facilities, equipment, etc., following standard operating procedures; operate HEPA-vac when removing hazardous building materials
  • Assemble and disassemble containment areas, including negative air pressure systems and decontamination enclosures; erect, work on, and dismantle scaffolding, ladders, and other staging; post signs and/or barricades according to standard procedure to ensure that hazardous building material removal area is closed to unauthorized personnel
  • Lay out all shapes, sizes, and varieties of insulation for installation on many different types of equipment and piping to include converters, strainers, fittings, valves, meters, and hot and cold piping. Interpret drawings, blueprints, and charts to determine piping layouts for installation of insulation as well as for removal of non-hazardous and hazardous building materials
  • Figure lag sizes for ordering insulation blankets for installation on heat exchangers, valves, strainers, flanges, etc.
  • Prepare and install insulation and fire caulking; mark insulated pipes appropriately
  • Remove a variety of non-hazardous building materials from buildings, facilities, equipment, etc.
  • Perform cleaning and decontamination operations of work areas; collect, tag, record, and transport waste to designated area
  • Maintain logs and records of service activities following OHSA and University Environmental Health and Safety standards
  • Perform rigging and handling of material and equipment being moved/removed by at various job sites or University locations
  • Check assigned areas for suspected hazardous materials; drill, cut, or forcibly open walls, ceilings, and floors to expose building materials
  • Use templates, various hand tools, such as knives, putty knives, calipers, dividers, etc., and portable power tools such as drills, reciprocating saws, torches, and other equipment to perform assigned tasks
  • Occasionally direct other workers as assigned
  • Assist trades person(s) in installation, repair, replacement, and cleaning of heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems
  • Assist in installation, repair, replacement, and cleaning of all oil and gas fired boiler, furnace, and incinerator equipment and systems
  • Work closely with the University Environmental Health and Safety personnel and third-party air monitoring vendors to ensure safe working conditions for assigned work sites
  • Refer all repair problems for other trades person, lead person, or supervisor; detect unusual conditions and report to supervisor
  • Maintain work areas and other assigned areas in a clean and orderly condition; maintain tools and equipment, in proper condition and repair as necessary; notify supervisor of equipment needs
  • Operate University vehicles as required

Job Requirements: Requires the use of commercial English, grammar and arithmetic such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, including decimals and fractions; simple use of formulas, charts, tables, drawings, specifications, schedules, wiring diagrams, together with the use of adjustable measuring instruments. Must also possess valid Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry Asbestos license and obtain annual recertifications. 1 to 2 years of effective experience.
Work Schedule: 6:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Days Off: Friday, Saturday, Sunday

A VALID DRIVER`S LICENSE AND SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF A MOTOR VEHICLE RECORDS CHECK WILL BE REQUIRED IN ADDITION TO STANDARD BACKGROUND CHECKS. NOTE: EMPLOYEE MUST BE ABLE TO WEAR A RESPIRATOR AND WILL BE SUBJECT TO MEDICAL CLEARANCE.
