Class Summary
The Gwinnett County Department of Transportation is committed to setting the standard of excellence for safe and efficient mobility. Serving the traveling public through our aviation, transit and surface transportation systems, the department consists of four groups: Intermodal Operations; Capital Program Delivery; Transit Program Delivery; and Traffic Engineering, Operations and Maintenance.
The Department of Transportation maintains an infrastructure system that includes more than 2,700 miles of road, over 750 signalized intersections, thousands of miles of traffic striping, the Gwinnett County Transit System, and one of the three busiest airports in Georgia. The Department of Transportation performs this mission with 198 approved full-time positions and a 2023 adopted operating budget of $80.03 million in multiple funds.
The Traffic Operations Section has several vacant Maintenance Tech III positions. This Maintenance Tech III position is responsible for serving as a lead on the crew, training personnel, and operating heavy equipment and performing associated labor duties in the construction, repair, and maintenance of public works infrastructure to include roadways, sewer, water and/or storm water lines.
This is a safety- sensitive position that will require a pre-employment drug test and subsequent random drug and alcohol testing in accordance with Gwinnett County Drug and Alcohol-free Workplace.
The position is a grade B22(3) with a salary range from $44,744 to $71,590. The chosen candidate's salary will be based on qualifications.
Effective 4/11/2023, this position is eligible for the Employee Referral Program.
Example of Duties
  • Serves as a lead to staff to include assigning and monitoring work, training employees and providing direction.
  • Supervise staff in the absence of the foreman.
  • Investigate citizen service requests to determine the best possible resolution and take necessary corrective actions.
  • Performs annual sign maintenance on county roadways to ensure compliance with M.U.T.C.D. and G.D.O.T. standards.
  • Operates heavy equipment to include installing traffic control signs and markings, installing pipe and structures, cleaning pipes, scraping roads, patching paving cuts, removing debris from pipes and structures and clearing rights-of-way.
  • Maintains proper traffic control at work sites to ensure safety for both the work crew and the motoring public.
  • Performs daily inventory checks on service trucks and obtains proper tools and/or equipment to perform job task.
  • Transport materials and heavy equipment to various work sites.
  • Inspects public works structures to ensure safe and proper operation.
  • Performs minor repairs and preventative maintenance on tools and equipment.
  • Cleans and repairs manholes as necessary to remove debris, obstacles and to prevent infiltration and installs and maintains sewer lines.
  • Provides landscaping maintenance to include: grooming, clearing of branches, and maintaining grass and brush, and flowers.
  • Reads and interprets drawings, basic plans and work orders, takes measurements and grade shots to ensure accuracy.
  • Pre-lining intersections and roadways for thermoplastic and paint markings.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

Qualifications
  • High School Diploma, or G.E.D.;
  • Three years of progressively responsible public works maintenance or related experience;
  • or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above;
  • Commercial Driver's License;
  • Road Flagging Certificate (must be obtained within 6-months of hire or promotion date)
  • Work Zone Traffic Safety Certification (must be obtained within 6-months of hire or promotion date )
  • CPR Certificate and First Aid Certificate (must be obtained within 6-months of hire or promotion date )
