Position: Maintenance Technician

About IDEA

IDEA Public Charter School in Washington, D.C. serves approximately 320 students in Grades 9-12. Our unique program prepares students for both college and careers. In addition to offering college preparatory courses, including Advanced Placement and Dual Enrollment options, we also provide students with a variety of options for career technical education. All students at IDEA complete a career program of study. We currently offer the following career programs: child development, construction, computer science, culinary arts, and hospitality and tourism. We are considering several new programs for School Year 2024-2025, including business management and cosmetology. Our school is located in the historic Deanwood neighborhood in Northeast Washington, D.C. We are proud to continue the tradition of educating the next generation of leaders in our community, and we are excited to bring in new talent to help us achieve our school’s mission.

Position Overview:

The Maintenance Technician will play a critical role in ensuring the safety, functionality, and cleanliness of the school facilities. This individual will be responsible for performing a variety of maintenance tasks, repairs, and custodial duties to maintain the physical plant in optimal condition for students, staff, and visitors. The Maintenance Technician will work collaboratively with the facilities team and school administration to address maintenance requests, respond to emergencies, and uphold the highest standards of safety and cleanliness throughout the school campus.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Perform routine maintenance tasks, inspections, and repairs on building systems and equipment, including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems.
  • Conduct preventive maintenance on building systems and equipment to identify and address potential issues before they become major problems.
  • Respond promptly to maintenance requests submitted by school staff and administrators, prioritizing tasks based on urgency and impact on school operations.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose problems with building systems and equipment, and implement effective solutions to restore functionality and efficiency.
  • Assist with the setup and breakdown of school events, including assemblies, meetings, and extracurricular activities, ensuring that facilities are prepared and maintained as needed.
  • Perform custodial duties as assigned, including cleaning classrooms, restrooms, hallways, and common areas, and ensuring that facilities are free of debris, litter, and hazards.
  • Monitor building security systems, fire alarms, and emergency equipment, and respond to emergencies such as power outages, floods, and other safety hazards.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies, tools, and equipment, and request replenishment as needed to support maintenance and custodial operations.
  • Collaborate with contractors, vendors, and outside service providers to coordinate repairs, installations, and maintenance services as needed.
  • Follow safety protocols and procedures at all times, including wearing personal protective equipment and using proper lifting techniques.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; vocational or technical training in building maintenance, HVAC, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in building maintenance, facilities management, or related field, preferably in an educational setting.
  • Knowledge of building systems and equipment, including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and repair common maintenance issues, such as leaks, clogs, malfunctions, and mechanical failures.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, school staff, and outside contractors.
  • Commitment to safety, cleanliness, and professionalism in all aspects of maintenance and custodial work.
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed to respond to emergencies and support school events and activities.
