Job description

Individuals who are eligible for a Training and Development assignment may also be considered for this position(s).
Under the supervision of the Supervisor of Building Trades, the Fab Shop/VR Maintenance Mechanic, CF is responsible for performing preventative maintenance and miscellaneous work in the maintenance, alteration, and repair of building and mechanical systems within the prison. Inspects, maintains, and repairs plumbing, heating, water, and sewer systems. Performs electrical maintenance and repair work, does minor welding, repairs automotive equipment, accomplishes miscellaneous minor building construction and repair work, miscellaneous interior, and exterior painting, refinishes furniture, estimate and requisition materials and supplies. Keeps records and prepares reports. Maintains order and job site security, preventative maintenance programs and operations, which are required to ensure efficient operation and proper functioning of all systems. Maintains order and supervises the conduct of inmates assigned. Trains and instructs inmates in their work assignments. Submits periodic written appraisals of their conduct and productivity. Prevents escapes and injury to themselves or to property. Maintains security, inspects premises, and searches inmates for contraband such as weapons or illegal drugs.

High Desert State Prison is located approximately eight miles east of the town of Susanville, or about a 1 hour 30 minute drive northwest of Reno, Nevada.

Possession of Minimum Qualifications will be verified prior to interview and/or appointment. If it is determined an applicant does not meet the Minimum Qualifications, the candidate will be withheld from the eligibility list, rendering them inactive and ineligible to be hired for the position. Candidates who have been withheld may file an appeal with the State Personnel Board.
Candidates new to CDCR are required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan Fingerprinting, and Tuberculosis testing prior to appointment followed by department annual Tuberculosis testing/evaluation thereafter.

Individuals who are eligible for a Training and Development assignment may also be considered for this position(s).
