Summary Description

Coordinate the inspection, maintenance and repair of railcars and plant equipment. Will be responsible to maintain facilities Preventive Maintenance Program. Will ensure that all mechanisms are operating properly and meet safety requirements. May research any major repair issues, review costs, authorize repairs and guide the repair process. Ensure all deadlines are met while monitoring that repairs meet budgetary concerns and fulfill compliance regulations. Train and supervisor employees of the maintenance department.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervise and direct the work of Maintenance Technicians in the department.
  • Strong troubleshooting abilities including proficiency in rapid problem diagnoses in PLC's, AC/DC drives and motors, servo drives, electronic instrumentation, discrete logic controls as well as hydraulic and pneumatic controls.
  • Use equipment as needed: welder, cutting torch and shop equipment to fabricate or repair defective parts as appropriate.
  • Implement and maintain a strong preventative maintenance plan across the facility and ensure schedules are being met.
  • Implement and maintain a tool crib management system to manage the inflow and outflow of tools.
  • Use precision measuring instruments to check tooling and parts.
  • Operate forklift as needed.
  • Assist with production set up and production movement.
  • Maintain adequate supply of parts to service and maintain equipment.
  • Maintain and report records of maintenance performed, and parts used.
  • Conduct safety and maintenance checks of building and production equipment and document checks and supply information to management.
  • Conduct performance checks of equipment based on PM service requirement and maintain records of checks.
  • Maintain forklifts and make repairs as needed. Maintain service agreements on larger repair needs on forklift fleet.
  • Install new equipment as needed as well as breakdown, move and set up existing equipment as needed.
  • Follow all safety rules, keep work area clean and comply with all OSHA and Cathcart Rail Environmental Health and Safety Policies
  • Complies with company’s Quality program by following all in house quality processes and procedures and required AAR and FRA rules and regulations as well as any client specific procedures.
  • Run and or route electrical and gas lines as needed.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED, Associates Degree in a related field preferred.
  • Previous management experience a plus.
  • Five or more years’ experience in electrical/mechanical maintenance field.
  • Strong troubleshooting abilities for hydraulic and pneumatic tools.
  • Ability to read blueprints and schematics.
  • Strong communication skills, be highly motivated, persistent, and dedicated
  • Must be able to accommodate on-call responsibilities and work overtime when needed to support production staff.
  • Knowledge of power distribution systems.                                                                          
  • Knowledge of predictive maintenance techniques/instrumentation.
  • Knowledge of National Electrical Codes
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office required.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

  • With the exception of clerical, administrative, and some management positions, which require indoor work, the physical environment requires the employee to work both inside and outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, dry/arid and dusty conditions. The environment requires working in close proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, in high and low precarious places, confined spaces.

    The work type is best described as heavy, hands-on mechanical work. Work is very physical, and without proper work planning can result in out of position pushing, pulling and lifting. Proper body mechanics, positioning and lifting techniques can be very important. Employees are urged to seek help when needed with heavier tasks, and to use lifting equipment where necessary. The positioning of the work being performed can change very frequently.

    Tools used: Various heavier air and electric powered tools are used, such as car jacks, impact wrenches, and grinders are used daily. Work also requires frequent use of hand wrenches, hammers, chisels, socket wrenches, and ladders. Cutting torches are also used, with welding equipment used upon qualification of employee.  

  • Climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, smelling and visual acuity, with color and depth perception
  • Ability to work in a confined space
