Function / Position Summary
The primary purpose of this position is to assist in the day-to-day operations of the maintenance department to provide students, staff and community with a functional, safe and attractive environment in which to learn. Duties may include the removal and installation of flooring and floor coverings, various carpentry functions as needed and/or other projects as assigned.
Job Duties / Responsibilities
- Install, repair and/or replace wood flooring, carpeting, carpet tile, vinyl tile, ceramic tile, linoleum or other specified floor coverings, including base boards, coves and metal stripping.
- Maintain floor coverings by using appropriate materials. If flooring material cannot be cleaned, remove old and/or worn floor coverings.
- Prepare and/or repair concrete floor areas by treating and cleaning surfaces. This may include using various types of patching materials (i.e., Quick Dry Cement, Pour Stone, grout, etc.).
- Performs general carpentry, install countertops and laminate repair/replacement/installation.
- Installs gymnasium floor supports for athletic equipment in accordance with manufacturer's specifications and blueprints. As well as other special floor coverings (i.e., non-skid surface coatings, special carpeting, etc.).
- Maintain and make field repairs to various flooring equipment (i.e., strippers, buffers, sanders, etc.) This may include repairs/overhauls to low pressure propane gas equipment and performing refilling operations.
- Initiate requests/orders, and maintain inventory of supplies and materials for the flooring warehouse.
- Install, repair, and replace restroom partitions.
- Move or assist in the removal of furniture to facilitate the installation of floor coverings.
- Review and interpret blueprints, specifications, and field drawings to determine materials and supplies needed.
- Make simple field drawings, keep records and maintain appropriate paperwork to perform assigned work.
- Other duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Experience in flooring installation, 3 or more years of experience is preferred.
- Knowledge of practices and procedures of floor coverings.
- Knowledge of practices and procedures of epoxy coating systems.
- Knowledge of and ability to recognize, understand, interpret, and apply all local, state, and federal codes, regulations, and ordinances including, but not limited to: Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), etc.
- Ability to communicate objectives with all personnel.
- Ability to use a personal computer for work record keeping and parts ordering.
- Ability to provide a very high level of customer service to the students, staff and community.
- Must have a valid Illinois driver's license.
- Knowledge of basic arithmetic, word vocabulary, and craft skills, including shop and system mathematical calculations common to the building maintenance and flooring trade.
- Knowledge of safety procedures and practices common to the building maintenance and flooring trade.
- Ability to read, write and verbally communicate in the English language
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work long hours as needed in adverse climatic conditions.
- Good physical health, ability to do heavy manual labor and lift 75 pounds.
- Ability to sit, stand, kneel, stoop, climb stairs and walk for extended periods of time.
- Ability to work on a scissor lift, boom lift and one man lift up to 60 feet.
- This is a 12-month ESSO position. Salary and benefits as established by the Board of Education. Flexible hours/OT may be necessary. Hours: Tuesday - Friday 2:30 p.m. - 11:00 p.m.; Saturday 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. or 2:30 p.m. - 11:00 p.m. *Work hours may change to meet deadlines. Valid Illinois Driver's License Required.
