DESCRIPTION
Napa Valley College is seeking a Machine Tool Shop Technician for the Machine Tool Technology Program. The Machine Tool Technology Program provides the needed training to set up and operate conventional Machine Tools and modern machining and turning centers. The program provides experience in using computers to program modern computer numerical controlled (CNC) machines.
The incumbent in this position will be providing support services for laboratory and classroom instruction for the Machine Tool Technology Program; identifying repair and replacement needs; installing, repairing and fabricating materials; managing the laboratory facilities; assisting in the completion of projects in accordance with trade standards; and providing supervision, information and direction to students on the proper use of equipment.
This job reports to Dean, Career Education and Workforce Development.
This is a part-time (25 hours per week), 10-months-per-year, classified position.y. The salary has an appropriate placement on range 21 of the current Classified Salary Schedule. The starting salary range is $3,188.75 to $3,690.63/month, with future steps up to $4,487,50/month. Placement is made based on experience. The college offers a fringe benefit package including medical, dental, vision, disability and life insurance, employee assistance program, and public employee retirement system membership. The district benefit allotment is prorated for less-than-full-time and less-than-twelve-month employees.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential Functions:
  • Assists faculty and staff with a variety of tasks (e.g. set up and clean up lab procedures, materials, equipment; enforcement of OSHA standards; problem-solving and troubleshooting; some clerical duties, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring adequate operation and understanding of processes.
  • Installs a variety of items for the purpose of providing equipment enhancements and upgrades.
  • Manages Machine Tool lab and its operations (e.g. inventory of lab items, ordering replacement stock, enforcing lab protocol and safety rules, maintaining processes, writing Computer Numerical Control (CNC) programs, assisting in the removal of hazmat coolant, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring operational integrity.
  • Oversees training and supervision of student activities (e.g. checking student lab work, tutoring, clarifying assignments, demonstrating and instructing use of lab equipment and safe lab procedures, etc.) for the purpose of providing assistance and direction.
  • Participates in meetings, workshops, trainings, and seminars for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform support to the Machine Tool Technology Program.
  • Prepares lab materials (e.g. instructional materials, computers, tools, Master Cam, CNC machines, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring industry relevant Machine Tool Shop lab for student learning.
  • Responds to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns.

Other Functions:
  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Minimum Qualifications
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
SKILLS are required to perform single, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating equipment used in lab; planning and managing projects; preparing and maintaining accurate records; training students; assisting faculty; and adhering to safety practices.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: methods, techniques, materials, tools used in Machine Tool lab; in depth knowledge of the Machine Tool Technology program; OSHA standards; Master Cam, CNC machines, Machine Tool repair; appropriate lab set-up; and safety practices and procedures.
ABILITY is required to schedule a number of activities, meetings, and/or events; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and consider a variety of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using a variety of processes. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with a variety of data; and utilize a variety of types of job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is moderate to significant. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: meeting deadlines and schedules; providing technical and academic problem-solving; troubleshooting in assigned instructional areas; coordinating general lab and support functions; performing necessary clerical duties; and demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic background of community college students.
Responsibility:
Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision following standardized practices and/or methods; directing other persons within a small work unit; operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units is often required to perform the job's functions. There is a continual opportunity to impact the organization's services.
Work Environment:
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some climbing and balancing, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 40% sitting, 30% walking, and 30% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and under conditions with exposure to risk of injury and/or illness. Job requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
Experience:
Five (5) years of job-related experience within a specialized field.
Education:
Community college and/or vocational school degree with study in job-related area.
Equivalency:
Seven (7) years of job-related experience within a specialized field.
Certificates and Licenses:
  • Valid CA Driver's License & Evidence of Insurability
  • Ability to Obtain Forklift Certificate

Continuing Education / Training:
  • Maintains Certificates and/or Licenses

Clearances:
  • Criminal Background Clearance
  • Tuberculosis Clearance
  • Physical Capacities Test Clearance

Desirable Qualifications
  • Experience or knowledge of CNC Machine Tools and related programming software
  • Knowledge of preventative maintenance practices in a machine shop environment
