The Linux Systems Administrator is responsible for the implementation, design, maintenance, and support of Red Hat Linux servers and other versions of Linux on WSSC Water’s platform. He/she will ensure maintenance, availability, and security of these systems and other related systems to address incident responses, and maintain 24×7×365 availability of the systems. The Linux Systems Administrator will also contribute to achieving the IT departmental work plan and will actively support development and execution of Commission-wide annual action items.
- Installs, configures, operates, and maintains Linux Systems (RHEL/CentOS / Fedora and the like) software and related infrastructure
- Maintains and improves the security posture and hardening of the Linux environments, vulnerability remediation deployments
- Evaluates new technologies, reviews and improves current technologies
- Performs backup/restore/rollback and disaster recovery operations in Linux Infrastructure environments
- Communicates with other teams to mitigate any issues with managed environments
- Patches updates on OS and applications, maintains package sources and compliance reports, and patches scheduled deployments
- Automates managing users, groups, password policies, and other user configurations within the WSSC Water IT Department requirements
- Creates, updates, and organizes technical documentation and knowledge base for the team and other departments
- Performs continuous health monitoring, improves the stability/performance of the Linux systems, and troubleshoots problems
- Creates, updates, and organizes technical documentation and knowledge base for the team and other departments
- Assists IT Security efforts by deploying server anti-malware solutions
- Assists other IT Application team members with problem resolution
- Assists desktop and help desk teams with problem resolution; resolves escalated tier 3 tickets
- Racks and moves physical servers and runs cables and fiber between servers and switches
- Provides systems support at WSSC Water’s 20+ remote sites
- Performs related IT functions and duties, as assigned by manager
- Solid knowledge of Linux systems administration
- Strong knowledge and experience with RedHat and Oracle based operating systems
- Skill in shell command line usage, scripting, and using automation tools
- Solid experience with the best practices of virtualized and/or containerized environments (e.g. VMware , Nutanix and cloud-based platforms)
- Proactive with the ability to take ownership of issues and follows them through to complete resolution
- ability to perform backup and restore functions and participate in disaster recovery exercises
- High School diploma (or equivalent) and 7+ years experience supporting Linux OS server systems administration in a large, complex IT environment
