Internal Medicine Veterinary Technician

VCA Veterinary Referral and Emergency Center of Westbury is seeking a motivated and compassionate Veterinary Technician to join our Internal Medicine Team. Technicians learn about complex disease and their interactions with treatment and other concurrent diseases. Technicians are trained to assist in interventional radiology procedures that uses advanced imaging modalities such as fluoroscopy, endoscopy, ultrasound, and computed tomography (CT).

VCA Veterinary Referral and Emergency Center of Westbury is a 24-hour emergency/critical care and specialty referral practice in Westbury, New York. Just 28 miles or a short train ride to the amazing New York City and beaches all around. We offer 5 specialties including: Emergency & Critical Care, Surgery, Internal Medicine, Neurology, and Oncology. We are Trauma Level 1 Certified, indicating our resources and ability to provide sophisticated emergent and critical patient care. We offer multiple advanced diagnostic and treatment modalities such as MRI, CT, and Fluoroscopy.

Summary of Job Description and Function:
  • Assist with diagnostic testing including: sample collection, venipuncture, radiography, submitting and running lab work
  • Perform sedation and anesthesia for endoscopes, bronchoscopes, and other procedures
  • Care for patients receiving radioactive iodine therapy and HBOT therapy
  • Assist in patient procedures: preparation of patients, instruments, equipment
  • Fill medications
  • Plan, organize, and manage the daily flow of services
  • Maintenance of equipment used in Internal Medicine service
  • Ensure documentation is accurate and complete
  • General nursing care
  • Additional duties as assigned

Minimum qualifications:
  • Candidate must be team focused and enjoy learning
  • Dependable attendance is required
  • Telephone and computer skills are necessary
  • Client communication and education - explaining administration of medications, follow-up care
  • Nursing care - IV placement, IV fluids, injectable medications, oral medications, animal handling
  • Efficiency - organize daily duties and procedures to best utilize staff's time.
  • Flexibility - working to ensure that the job is done properly (willing to work beyond scheduled hours if necessary).
  • Medical records - charges, medical history, medications, laboratory reports, etc.
  • Anesthesia - administering and monitoring
  • Radiology - x-ray technique and safety
  • Diagnostics - ECG, BP, SPO2, blood draws, preparing samples and lab forms
  • Pharmacy - familiarity with drugs, creating labels, filling prescriptions


Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 1 years of experience as a veterinary technician
  • Valid New York License Veterinary Technician (LVT)
  • Flexibility with work hours and able to work additional hours when necessary
  • Availability to be on-call and work some weekends/holidays
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment
  • Knowledge of animal anatomy, physiology, common diseases, and common surgical procedures
  • Understanding and experience with routine repair and maintaining anesthesia related equipment

Compensation: $24 - $35 / hr based on skill set, experience and licensure status
