Job Title: Licensed Practical Nurse
Department: Behavioral Services Unit
Position Status:Full Time, 36 hours per week
Schedule: 3x12s or 5x8s, self-scheduling model with the option to choose start times of 7a, 11a, 3p, 7p, or 11p. Every other weekend required.
RN to Patient Ratio: 1:5
Position Summary: Licensed Practical Nurses at Cayuga Medical Center are an integral part of the collaborative interdisciplinary team devoted to the delivery of comprehensive and compassionate care to the Tompkins County community. LPNs are able to practice at their full scope of practice, and have the opportunity to engage in the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of programs and services with the goal of improving patient outcomes, and execute an optimal plan of care in a shared governance environment.

Location: Cayuga Medical Center Main Campus - Ithaca, NY
Department Specific: The Behavioral Services Unit offers the opportunity to work with a variety of patient acuity levels, and with a diverse population of patients. Orientation is up to 3 months long, is tailored to the individual needs of the employee, and includes Crisis Intervention Training and TRU Facilitation courses. Employees are welcomed into a supportive and collaborative interdisciplinary team, in a shared governance environment. Employees are also offered an array of opportunities within the department such as charge, participation in developmental projects and access to a plethora of organizational resources for continuing education.
Essential Functions:
- Contributes to safe, therapeutic milieu
- Administers prescribed medications, making constant adjustments commensurate with a patient's condition under the supervision of qualified Registered Nurse
- Facilitates preparation and administration of other treatment regimens within the scope of practice
- Completes assigned safety checks/rounds, and occurrence reports
- Communicates with physician and treatment on all health care variables contributing to successful treatment outcomes at the direction of the RN in charge.
- Collects information for physical & mental health assessments
- Participates in the development care plans for patients, helping them be as independent as possible
- Observes and reports behavioral changes
- Maintains control of drugs and medications
- Helps patients improve their coping abilities
- Works with patients' families to help improve the patient's abilities & help them deal with family member's mental illness
- Records all care information concisely, accurately and completely, in a timely manner, in the appropriate format and on the appropriate forms
- Performs other position-related duties as assigned, depending on assignment setting
- Respects cultural and religious practices of patients
- Upholds HIPAA regulations
- Punctual and dependent for assigned/confirmed shifts
Requirements:
- License: Active New York Nursing license, out of state nurses are still eligible to apply
- Minimum education: completion of an accredited LPN program
- Experience: two years of medical/surgical experience required, prior experience in a mental health setting a plus
- Certifications: BLS (new hires have the opportunity to obtain these certifications during introductory period)
- Physical:Repetitive use of hands and fingers (e.g., Use of computer keyboard); may require lifting and carrying light loads (up to 40 lbs), including boxes, equipment, IV solutions and stooping and kneeling (e.g., to pick up items from the floor, to remove and replace items on lower shelves and to file documents in lower file drawers); sitting, walking, or standing for long periods of time may be necessary; must be able physically to operate the equipment used for the job.
- Mental: Emotional Stability and organizational skills necessary to meet the demands of a stressful environment and emergencies.Good interpersonal skills to interact in appropriate manner with varying personalities, relating to patients, peers, supervisors, physicians, other hospital staff, and outside agencies.
