Job description

Position

Global Energy Monitor is seeking a People & Culture Specialist who will support multiple critical functions essential to Global Energy Monitor’s (GEM) day-to-day work. Reporting to GEM’s Director of People & Culture, the People & Culture Specialist will provide general administrative support for all HR functions.


This is a part-time (6-month temporary) position with a weekly work schedule of 20 to 24 hours.

California, Colorado, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, or Wisconsin.


The Challenge

According to the Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change (IPCC), we have less than a decade to make massive and unprecedented changes in the global economy to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. To meet that challenge, Global Energy Monitor is creating trackers and other tools to provide detailed information on energy facilities, sponsors, and financing.


About Global Energy Monitor

Global Energy Monitor (GEM) is a network of researchers developing information for the worldwide climate and clean energy movement. Since the organization’s founding in 2007, GEM’s research has become an essential tool for activists, journalists, policymakers, and scientists. GEM’s data and reports are used and cited by organizations ranging from Greenpeace to The Wall Street Journal. GEM’s information is used by Bloomberg Terminals, the International Energy Agency, the IPCC, Climate Analytics, Carbon Tracker Initiative, and hundreds of others.


Location

GEM does not have a central office; instead, GEM works with employees to create suitable home offices catered to the needs of their role.


Position Summary and Duties

Payroll

  • Run bi-weekly payroll for US-based staff in 27+ states in BambooHR payroll system.
  • Work with employees and managers to ensure timesheets are submitted and approved in a timely manner.
  • Tax account setup and business registrations.
  • Ensure compliance with state and federal employment and payroll laws.

HR Information System Maintenance & Records Management

  • Execute daily activities related to our HRIS system (BambooHR), guaranteeing the accuracy of data inputs for effective and efficient reporting.
  • Process, update, and maintain employee job and benefits information promptly in BambooHR.
  • Manage employee leave changes in BambooHR
  • Generate insightful reports and analytics as needed for strategic decision-making.
  • Provide technical support for employees' questions about BambooHR and manage employee time tracking process.

General HR Support

  • Oversee GEM’s HR email address, ensuring prompt and effective communication.
  • Regularly review federal, state, and international employment laws and regulations, along with organizational policies.
  • Support routine HR tasks, including record management, compensation administration, benefits administration, and employee engagement.
  • Collaborate with the HR team to enforce HR policies and practices consistently throughout the organization.
  • Liaise with external partners, such as our global PEO - DEEL, consultants, and vendors, to execute tasks efficiently.
  • Support the organization in maintaining high standards of HR practices.
  • Undertake additional duties as required, adapting flexibly to the evolving needs of the organization.

Education & Experience

The following experience and skills are required for this position:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
  • 2+ years of relevant experience.
  • 1+ year of multistate payroll experience.
  • Fluency in English.

The following experience and skills are desired for this position:

  • PHR or SPHR certification.
  • Experience with BambooHR HRIS/Payroll platform.
  • A high degree of service orientation.
  • Excellent organizational skills, initiative, and attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to self-direct and prioritize among different tasks in a remote work environment required.
  • Capacity to apply discretion and maintain a high level of confidentiality when handling sensitive information.
  • Track record of working to advance a diverse, inclusive, and equitable work environment.
  • Experience and/or interest in energy, climate, sustainability, open data, etc.

Pay and Benefits

This is a part-time (6-month temporary), 20-24 hours per week work-from-home position. The pay rate is $38.51 per hour.
