BENEFIT INFORMATION:

The Position:
Perform library-related clerical work in a community or specialized library, or at Regional or Library Headquarters.

Positions allocable to this part-time, hourly class report to a permanent staff member in the LA County Library and perform clerical duties requiring a working knowledge of routine library-related clerical and support functions. Incumbents must exercise initiative and independent judgment within established procedural and policy limits.

Essential Job Functions

Essential duties include, but are not limited to:

Checks in and out and/or processes library materials for customers.

Registers new customers (borrowers) according to pre-determined and specialized procedures.

Explains and enforces library policies and procedures.

Answers questions and gives information to the public concerning such matters as library rules, fines and fees, locating materials, etc.

Operates office machines such as computers and small office equipment incidental to the performance of other duties.

Performs related general clerical work as required.

Assists in shelving and transporting materials.

May pack and unpack outgoing and incoming delivery shipments.

Requirements

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS: Three (3) months of experience* providing service to the public to achieve customer satisfaction**.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Successful completion of one (1) or more college courses from an accredited college or university in Library Technology or Library Science***.
  • Experience assisting in the operation of a community or specialized library performing general library tasks at the level of a Library Page, NC****.

AGE: At least 18 years of age.

PHYSICAL CLASS II - LIGHT: This class includes light physical effort that may include occasional light lifting to a 10-pound limit and some bending, stooping, or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION:
*Experience is evaluated on the basis of a verifiable 40-hour week. Part-time experience is credited on a part-time ratio, i.e., working 20 hours per week for two months equals one month of experience.

**Typically, such assignments include receptionist, sales associates, food servers, and customer service representatives.

****Library Page, NC assist in the general operation of a community or specialized library by sorting & arranging books and other materials; serves library customers; maintains supplies; inspects books and materials for cleanliness and/or repairs; sets up library premises for special events, programs, and meetings; assists with facility opening and closing procedures; and maintains the overall orderliness of library facilities.

Additional Information

EXAMINATION CONTENT:

This examination will consist of an evaluation of education and experience based upon application information and desirable qualifications weighted 100%.
Extra credit will be awarded to qualified candidates with the desired qualifications.

Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the examination to be added on the eligible register.

ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION:
The names of candidates receiving a passing grade on the examination will be placed on the eligible list in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation.
