Job Description
The Librarian will provide educational and pedagogical leadership, guiding collaborative investigations with teachers and students, in addition to developing and managing the school library.
Librarians are co-creators of information within the school and the wider community. They challenge learners to seek appropriate information, to use sound methods of inquiry and research, and teach them to question the information they find and use. Librarians act as curators of information, caretakers of content and people, catalysts of people and services, and connectors to sources of information, multi-literacies, and reading.
The Librarian oversees the continued growth and maintenance of the collection, ensures that circulation, cataloging and processing services function effectively, and supervises support staff.
The role will report dually to Elementary and Middle School Directors and is estimated at roughly 18-20 hours per week roughly three days on campus, schedule to be determined.
Roles & Responsibilities
  • Work with the classroom teacher and students throughout the year to develop the skills needed for them to succeed in units of inquiries
  • Support students' creative, analytical and critical thinking skills through using online and print primary sources, evaluating information sources (especially web resources) and developing in-depth questioning skills
  • Promote an appreciation of children's literature and enjoyment in recreational reading
  • Help children to become familiar with a range of authors and genres in both print and digital formats
  • Guide students and teachers in research and reading choices
  • Work with Coordinators, class teachers and specialist teachers to support curriculum innovation
  • Actively promote student discovery and joy of literacy across the curriculum
  • Introduces concepts of plagiarism and copyright issues, as well as bibliographic skills, can and should be introduced at this formative stage in a student's development. This may be a unit of inquiry with students in grades 4-8, across a 6-week period.
  • Collaborate with DEIB (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Belonging) Committee to ensure resources reflect learning initiatives
  • Guide literacy events Prek - Grade 8
  • Develop Summer Reading Resources
  • Other projects as assigned
  • Maintain a collection of current professional resources for teachers including online access to journals and library software
  • Provide informal one-on-one support to teachers regarding resources in a variety of formats and strategies for their use

Specific Duties will include:
  • Cataloging and indexing using school software platform (Alexandria)
  • Ensure books and resources are well organized and up to date;
  • Ensure the library is clean and tidy and is a safe learning environment
  • Plan and implement library/global research-based lessons
  • Have clear policies and procedures that are up date in the library
  • Manage and meet with small team of parent volunteers to support library initiatives (bi-weekly)
  • Join PYP / MYP planning meetings (roughly 4 hours per week)

Qualifications
Candidates must:
  • Possess an minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in an education-related field
  • Have a minimum of 2 years of experience working with students in a library sciences role and/or classroom environment
  • Demonstrate a current understanding of La Scuola's Elementary and Middle Years curriculum
  • Embrace the La Scuola philosophy of "Niente senza gioia!"
  • Be bilingual, fluent in Italian and/or Spanish

Additional Information
Must be authorized to work in the U.S. Prior to beginning work and as a condition of employment in order to comply with the law, all employees must provide documentation to prove eligibility to work in the United States.
In addition, the final candidate will need to pass both Criminal Justice Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation Fingerprint Clearance and a physical exam, and provide a recent copy of a negative TB test and other immunization records.

Estimated annual salary range: $35 - $38 per hour depending on credentials, qualifications and experience.
