OVERVIEW:
The Liability Investigator plays an integral role in the Risk Management Department, focusing on identification of risk and issues of exposure to the institution, tracking and trending liabilities, and working with outside counsel to assist in the defense of lawsuits.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Reviews medical records for risk issues and identification of potential liability claims.
- Assess medical records for documentation deficiencies and follows up with appropriate personnel to reinforce proper documentation.
- Coordinates securing of all documents, reports and studies relevant to a potential or actual legal action.
- Investigates adverse events and interviews staff accordingly.
- Corresponds with defense counsel to provide necessary information and documents.
- Collaborates with Performance Improvement and Clinical Risk Management to streamline and expedite investigations.
- Participates in PI activities, such as root cause analysis and Morbidity and Mortality Conferences, to seek safer systems and processes.
- Initiates tracking and trending of particular issues and assists Director with education of hospital staff.
- Prepares case summaries and reports for Risk Management/PI meetings and attorneys as needed.
- All other duties as requested.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
- Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN), highly preferred.
Experience:
- Minimum three (2) years in Risk Management preferred.
- Minimum five (3) years of clinical experience.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Knowledge of accreditation/regulatory standards.
- Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)
- Computer knowledge
- Ability to fully utilize BHMC’s electronic record systems, equipment and other healthcare and billing systems relevant to this position.
Licenses, Certifications:
- Registered Nurse, Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant or MD with New York State preferred.
- Certification in Risk Management preferred.
Physical Requirements:
- Position requires prolonged periods of standing, reaching, walking throughout the working day.
- Position will be required to stoop, bend, lift, and carry items weighing up to 25 pounds.
