Legal Counsel | 100% Remote

  • Are interested in developing legal expertise in state property and casualty and workers' compensation insurance law, and federal and state privacy laws?
  • Have some prior civil litigation and/or administrative law experience?
  • Expertise with negotiating transactions and an eye for business issue resolution?

  • Have a minimum of 3-5 years relevant experience, with significant law firm and/or in-house experience; public company familiarity preferred.
  • Hold a law degree from an ABA accredited law school and are duly licensed to practice law in one the United States.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Performs legal services in the Company for assigned area(s) of responsibility.
  • May advise Company employees on their role in litigation and support senior attorneys in litigation.
  • Creates and conducts law related training programs, internally and externally.
  • Work collaboratively to support business objectives and corporate governance.
  • Achieve a standard of excellence with work processes and outcomes, honoring company policies and regulatory compliance.
  • Perform legal analysis and make recommendations on risk, and compliance issues, including insurance, professional liability, employment, or litigation matters
  • Provide legal advice to business departments on a wide range of legal issues; research and/or interpret legal issues and statutory and case law; draft and review legal opinions, resolutions, contracts and other legal documents.
  • Drafts, monitors, and prepares comments on proposed state and federal legislation and regulation; provides advice on revisions to legislation and regulation; recommends changes to Company policies and practices to comply with new compliance and regulatory requirements.
  • Prior civil litigation experience to oversee and support outside counsel in civil litigation and administrative hearings is preferred.
  • Answers correspondence and responds to policyholder and regulatory agency inquiries on legal matters related to Company.
  • Conducts compliance investigations.
  • Provides counsel and guidance on labor and employment issues
  • Counsel and advise the business units regarding new and existing legal requirements that apply to the workers' compensation industry and other business-related initiatives, products and services. Support and assist the business on implementing and executing such guidance.
  • Build and maintain strong and effective relationships with all relevant internal and external stakeholders, including but not limited to federal and state regulatory entities.
  • Perform legal analysis and make recommendations on contractual, risk, and compliance issues.
  • Effectively review and negotiate legal agreements with third parties with designated internal business partner and appropriately document business relationship for execution by authorized parties.
  • Familiarity with intellectual property issues.
  • Proficient in state and federal privacy laws and data protection

Job Requirements:
  • A minimum of 3-5 years relevant experience required, with a combination of major law firm and in-house experience with a public company strongly preferred.
  • Exposure to state property and casualty and workers' compensation insurance laws and federal and state privacy laws strongly preferred.
  • Law degree from an ABA accredited law school and a license to practice law in a domestic jurisdiction.
  • Analyze complex situations and provide practical, timely and accurate legal advice.
  • Excellent contract drafting, negotiation and complex legal project management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for working across teams and interacting with management and the board of directors; able to build and maintain good relationships both internally and externally
  • Able to make practical, timely, solution-based decisions, while demonstrating superior judgement.
  • Strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills including ability to assess implications of proposed actions/arguments and respond appropriately in internal and external forums.
  • Ability to engage colleagues from a business as well as a legal perspective and to deal effectively at all levels of the organization.
  • Flexible, collaborative mindset and willingness to tackle projects outside of areas of prior experience.
  • Be well-organized, self-initiating and have the ability to handle multiple initiatives simultaneously.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 applications

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted for the requirements listed above.
Certificates/Licenses
Law degree from ABA accredited law school and domestic license to practice law.
Work Environment:
  • This role is a remote opportunity and only open to candidates currently located in the United States.
  • It requires a suitable space that provides a private and quiet workplace.
  • Expected Work Hours: Schedules are set to accommodate the requirements of the position and the needs of the organization and may be adjusted as needed.
  • Travel: May be required to travel to off-site location(s) to attend meetings, as necessary

This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines
  • This is largely a sedentary role; however, some mobility is required
  • May work early, late, or occasional weekend hours to accommodate business needs
  • Occasional lifting of a maximum of 30lbs.
