Job description

Position Summary

As a Learning Experience (LX) Designer, you will work with teams of other designers in Learning Innovation and Lifetime Education at Duke University to prototype and develop high-quality digital Learning Experiences for Duke’s Office of Climate and Sustainability, Duke Environment, and other educational programs at Duke. Working closely with world-class faculty and staff at Duke, you will design digital learning activities, create digital courses and programs, consult on instructional design, and collaborate on innovative uses of education technology in higher education. While optional, Duke Learning Innovation and Lifetime Education prefers candidates who have skills in designing graphics or motion graphics for digital course content. This is a three-year, fixed-term position.

Responsibilities

Consulting and Design (30%)

  • Collaborate, consult, and assist instructors with their digital learning design needs, including integrating digital modules in face-to-face courses, creating hybrid or fully online courses, designing digital programs, integrating technologies and apps into digital Learning Experiences, and solving other technical or design challenges for education.
  • Design prototypes of digital learning activities that help learners apply what they are learning and achieve learning goals, such as interactive lessons, learning assessments, practice or reflective exercises, engagement with peers or the instructor, or other activities based on specified requirements, pedagogical best practices, effective use of technologies for learning, and user-friendly design.

Project Management and Course Design (60%)

  • Manage projects: build consensus on learning design decisions with faculty and team members’ expertise; facilitate and update course development workflows; ensure instructional and technical integrity with quality assurance checks; maintain project timelines; coordinate efforts between the different roles of a project team; provide project status updates to key Duke stakeholders and Duke’s partners.
  • Work with faculty or other subject matter experts to draft and edit learning content, including scripts, storyboards, slides for video lessons, learning assessments, assignment instructions and rubrics, discussion prompts, and copywriting.
  • Perform quality assurance reviews of course content and sites, identifying and fixing errors, ensuring content is accurate, accessible, and professionally produced.
  • Build out organized and user-friendly Learning Experiences using Duke’s digital course platforms (i.e., Canvas, Coursera, etc.) and learning technologies.
  • Test Learning Experiences and provide feedback to instructors on how to improve the learner’s user experience.
  • Monitor digital courses as they are piloted (e.g., reviewing learners’ feedback in survey responses or discussion forums), as well as help identify and resolve technical problems that occur while the project is active.

Faculty Development and Other Duties (10%)

  • At the direction of team leadership, create and facilitate trainings, workshops, templates, and design guides that help faculty develop skills in digital course design, teaching, and in the use of technology for learning.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities

None.
