Position Summary:

The lead ICU technician will provide direct supervision and support for ICU technicians, assistants and Veterinary Technician assistants. The lead ICU technician will ensure all ICU patients are adequately cared for and the ICU technicians on the floor feel supported and take designated breaks. They will ensure proper, efficient work flow, provide clinical and technician training on hospital policies and protocols and maintain clear and open communication with the team and doctors. The lead ICU technician will serve on the floor as an ICU technician with responsibilities including performing patient assessments, obtaining vital signs including Doppler blood pressures, administering medications, calculating fluid rates, CRIs and nutritional requirements for critically ill and injured dogs and cats.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Primary patient care responsibilities as listed above

  • Assign ICU patients to designated technicians/assistants based on technician skill level and caseload

  • Ensure all ICU patients receive treatments and diagnostics in a timely manner

  • Ensure ICU technicians, assistants and Veterinary Technician assistants take designated shift breaks

  • Provide support for doctors/technicians and work closely with all services to ensure patients are admitted to the ICU in a timely manner

  • Provide support for ICU and ER patient care managers in regards to working interviews, training and onboarding as directed.

  • Serve as point of contact for any issues that arise during a shift

  • Other duties as assigned to support hospital services

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Advanced technical knowledge and skills

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and team skills

  • Handles multiple demands, increased workload and changes in work environment with ease and professionalism.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • One to two years supervisory experience in a similar setting

  • Graduate of an accredited Veterinary Technician program

  • Licensed Veterinary Technician in Tennessee or registry eligible. If registry eligible, must acquire a state of Tennessee license within 12 months from date of hire or transfer.

  • Minimum of one year of emergent or critical care clinical experience

While performing the duties of any of these positions, the employee is frequently required to bend, stand, stoop, walk, sit, talk, and listen; may be required to walk or stand for long periods of time; will use hands to manipulate, handle, or feel; will reach with hands and arms. The employee is often required to lift and carry animals weighing fifty pounds or more; handle dogs weighing up to 150 pounds.
