Job description

Under the direct supervision of the Security Supervisor - RPHC, ensures a security station is maintained and/or conspicuously patrols the facility and grounds of the River People Health Center, assists visitors, and performs other activities related to the safety and security of staff, patients, and visitors. Assumes a leadership role of all Security Guards on the shift and overseeing shift security operations. Some activities can involve elements of danger or risk of injury. Protects the property against theft, fire, vandalism, or other illegal, unsafe, or unauthorized activities. This job class is treated as FLSA non-exempt and considered a DRIVING position, subject to working variable day/evening shifts.


Essential Functions: (Essential functions may vary among positions, but may include the following task, knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics. Responsible for ensuring a safe and secure facility.

  1. Patrols assigned areas, checking for suspicious activity or safety/fire hazards, monitor security alarms and dispatch Security Guards or public safety personnel promptly to location(s) where needed, and report unsafe acts or conditions.
  2. Investigates and/or reports hazards, unusual or suspicious circumstances to the appropriate leadership personnel.
  3. Checks doors and windows of buildings to ensure they are tightly closed and locked; notes in written log any unlocked doors/windows; submits information to supervisor and/or manager.
  4. Escorts people/property to desired destination when monies, documents or safety of property or persons are a concern. Assists with de-escalation and problem-solving support regarding acute behavioral incidents.
  5. Assist RPHC Staff, patients and visitors as needed with safety and security issues and concerns, as well as with directions and general guidance regarding facility.
  6. Responds to alarms and dispatched calls and takes appropriate actions.
  7. Maintains visitor logs and is accountable for visitors while on property, allows entry to building/areas in compliance with policies.
  8. Enforce organizational policies. (i.e. parking, smoking, badge compliance)
  9. Assist in emergency situations, ensuring public safety personnel are escorted in sensitive areas while on-site, in accordance with RPHC access policies.
  10. Acts as first responder to disturbances/emergencies such as infant abduction alarms, fire alarms, panic alarms, or intruder alarms.
  11. In the event of emergencies, must take charge of maintaining order, safety and to protect personnel and property. Some activities can involve verbally interacting with and de-escalating potentially volatile individuals.
  12. Appropriately document any significant security and safety incidents and complete reports in accordance with established policy and procedures.
  13. Observes normal rules of safety and makes recommendations for safety issue improvements.
  14. Performs other job related duties as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics:

  • Knowledge of the history, cultures, laws, rules, customs and traditions of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community.
  • Knowledge of general security and patrol procedures and practices.
  • Knowledge of the information needed in reports of incidents occurring during shift hours.

  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with department staff, other SRPMIC staff, including law enforcement agency staff, and the public.
  • Skill in following oral and written instructions, guidelines and procedures.
  • Skill in understanding a variety of rules, regulations and policies.
  • Skill in interpreting and assessing situations, issues and concerns.
  • Skill in listening well, and communicating effectively with Community Members, employees, and diverse members of the public having considerable variation in values and educational and cultural backgrounds.

  • Ability to attain and maintain certifications and training.
  • Ability to plan and organize shift work.
  • Ability to adhere to a strict code of ethics, code of conduct and department values.
  • Ability in preparing incident reports and in documenting incidents.
  • Ability to handle and control any situations that requires immediate response.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment while responding to various situations.
  • Ability to work in inclement weather conditions.
  • Ability to remain on feet for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to climb multiple flights of stairs quickly, run/sprint and move heavy equipment (50 lbs).
  • Education: Graduation from high school or GED equivalent. Three (3) years of experience in security, law enforcement, or military. . For enrolled Community members without a GED, must obtain a GED. Requires participation in the HR GED Program and successful completion of the Arizona state certified exam in order to continue employment with SRPMIC.
  • 2 years' supervisory experience preferred.
  • Ability to be First Aid Certified within 90 days of hire.

  • Equivalency: Any equivalent combination of experience and education that will allow the applicant to satisfactorily perform the duties of the job may be considered when filling the position.
  • Underfill Eligibility: An enrolled Community Member whom closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19, Underfill.
  • Employees in, and applicants applying for, jobs providing direct services to children are subject to the "Community Code of Ordinances", Chapter 11, "Minors", Article X. "Investigation of Persons Working With Children".
  • May be required to work beyond normal work hours including nights, weekends & holidays.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Driver's License.


Prior to hire as an employee, applicants will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. Will be required to pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check. Employees are subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
